Haha good call. No 6 lb EVER. If your using flouro the lowest u ever need to go is 10 and that would be summer runs only. Even in low clear water winters will take 10 lb ultragreen all day longMetal wrote:Don't ask questions bonker if you don't want the right answers. I'm gonna tell you one more time so it will sink in ULTRAGREEN!! NO 6 LB EVER!!

+1 for Maxima. If you're looking for something cheap, Izorline makes good product, but when it comes to lower tests maxima is your best friend. They make a nice fluoro for leaders, but I wouldn't run fluoro for main unless you can help it, it hurts the pocket book enough as it is.gfakkema wrote:I agree with what everyone else is saying. I have been using maxima ultragreen since I began and love it. I thought that I would switch it up awhile ago and tried a few different brands/tests/colors including ande's, p-line, and some cheap crap. I've always found that the maxima is always stronger than any other line that I tried in respective test. I absolutely hated the ande's. Used it for a bit but broke off WAY easier than the maxima. Now, all I use is the maxima ultragreen in different tests. Stick with maxima bonker, you will be glad you did!

Maxima is the tops, i love izor line too. Their xxx copoylmer or whatever it is makes for some good line. It lasted pretty long on my baitcaster and spinning rod, both with 8lb, and i was catching kings and chums, noodle rod of course.
But like everyone has been saying 10lb ultra green, and if your that scared 8 is still better then 6

Re: Ultra Green OR Fluorocarbon
I recently got two bad spools of Izor line, took them both back it seems that they incorrectly labeled for LB rating and it kept breaking when it should not have. Used Maxima once for Chum fishing this year and it really help up the brutes, very good line, Maxima.

My baitcaster-20lb power pro high vis braid, it's a 6lb diamiter.
My spinning reels-just depends on the fish
Kings-20-30lb maxima
Coho-12lb maxima
Humpies-15lb maxima
I only use braid for steelies, but I'm gonna switch to braid full time

Where are you shopping? Sign me up, because I'd run it on my mainline if that were the case.Brat Bonker wrote:maxima fluoro is actually cheaper than the UGnatetreat wrote:+1 for Maxima. I too am still not confident in bigger line. i use to break off a lot of fish using small other lines from 4-8lb. but after reading so many good reviews on UG. i went and bought a small spool of 8lb ultra green leader. when it ran out i bought a another small spool then when i realised it was my new favorite line i bought a big spool of it. I can honestly say i got more bites, and never broke off any fish from big chums to lower teens steelhead. but like 3 weeks ago i kept getting skunked so i tried tried 6lb seagar flourocarbon leader and got lots of bites but lost a lot of my jigs on hooksets. so i went back to UG after losing 3 fish

Re: Ultra Green OR Fluorocarbon
I will buck the trend and say that I run Maxima UG for my mainline and Fluoro for my leader. The real issue is that most 'filler type' spools of fluoro can be really inconsistent and the joiner knot is very important. I use fluoro that is really fly tippet material. Bill Herzog turned me on to it. It's made by Seaguar and its called Grandmax. it is expensive (like $17 for a 27 yard spool), but its the strongest fluoro by diameter around and the most consistent. Their comparing diameters with other fluro, 12lb test is usually around .011". In Grandmax this same diameter is 16.5 lb test and their .008 is 9.2lb test. You can get away with running a smaller diameter leader which is also nearly invisible. The abrasion resistance is VERY good for fluoro (the best I've seen) and very limp. They also make a Grandmax FX that is even more abrasion resistant, but a little stiffer than I prefer. Sure its more expensive than Maxima, but if it helps you catch a few more steelies, isn't it worth the cost?

Re: Ultra Green OR Fluorocarbon
Heheh, I have spools of both regular Seaguar and tippet material from Seaguar and other Mfgs and resellers (I doubt most or any of the fly gear companies make their own). I normally grab what's handy when swinging a fly or gear unless it's the real tiny stuff for tiny flies. The only real advantage I see in the tippet material is it comes in a real nice dispenser and it makes it easy to deal with on the water. Most of the fly guys I know just use the regular fluoro leader, I'm going to guess it's price driven as most of them are rather "cost conscious" to be PC.
If I was Bill and had all my gear handed to me, I'd go for the high priced spread too.
If ya break one off go up a size. It's not like anyone here is going to go hungry by losing a fish. And if that’s the case, better take a step back and assess priorities. Don't we do this for fun?

Re: Ultra Green OR Fluorocarbon
Yeah I totally get where you are coming from. Considering my average leader is 3-6' max even at $17 for a 27yd spool of the Seaguar GrandMax, that is still less than a dollar a leader. That's got going to break my bank.

Re: Ultra Green OR Fluorocarbon
Yeah, I hear ya, the cost of the leader isn't so much, more of the worring about the ultra green vs any fluoro. A lot of the guys are tossing 2 feet at whack all day long. The old saying if you aren't losing gear, you aren't fishing......TroutSnipr wrote:Yeah I totally get where you are coming from. Re: Ultra Green OR Fluorocarbon
Ya I bought a big old spool of 12 lb. izor not too long ago. I spooled up two bait casters, one on my float rod and one on my drift rod. Both snapped in the middle of the line within 10 casts. Luckily I had a spool of 10 lb. izor with me, so I just spooled up again. I think I'm done fishing izorline though. Not worth the trouble when I know I'm getting a quality product with maxima every time.strider43 wrote:I recently got two bad spools of Izor line, took them both back it seems that they incorrectly labeled for LB rating and it kept breaking when it should not have.
