We timed our arrival to coincide with the predicted 32 degree temps. (9am) Foggy weather and a great horned owl greeted us on approach. It was 27 degrees when we launched our 16' Hewescraft. The wind was calm and the lake like glass most of the day. We were glad for our cover and heater as we started scouting for fish.
We searched several known spots without success. The Arm held small fish looking for cover, while the western wall and bowl area were unproductive. The eastern shore mid lake, held mostly new plants. The inlet stream held aggressive bows, but were all 12-14" newcomers. Almost all fish were released.
We marked several German Browns, but found no takers. Finally around mid day and mid lake, we picked up our first decent carryover. A 17" rainbow popped off the downrigger at 21'. We fished 80-100 FOW and found larger fish 20-40' deep.
A surprising day to be out fishing and a great way to wrap up January.
