Out hunting for the 50" musky again using my fly rod and personal pontoon boat. No luck again today. Weather was too much like yesterday. We're in this high pressure holding pattern right now. I'll try again tomorrow morning. I plan to fish every morning this week. I chose this week because of the moon phase and now that the trees are starting to change fall colors I know the musky will start putting on the feed bag and move up into some classic type habitat! It's up to you to make it a great day!

As someone who also chases the same fish on the fly rod, I am going to shoot you one piece of knowledge that been gathered over many years. You need to go north for the best chance at a 50.

Thank you for the very wise advice! No doubt I have a lot to learn and I'm just at the beginning of this journey. I will head north soon, but in the mean time I'll keep pressing on locally to gain general knowledge of the fish knowing that a 50" musky would likely be a new state record. You are soooo correct that Silver Lake is not my best chance at a 50"er. Silver lake first planted tiger musky in 2002. It's SLIGHTLY possible then that the oldest musky in the lake is 16 years old. According to this study from WI, ( https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/documents/musky/Muskyupdate_2012.pdf ) it generally takes at least 13 years before a musky will reach 50". Now I'm sure that data relates to larger bodies of water with better habitat and better food sources, but remember what Lloyd Christmas (played by Jim Carrey) in the movie "Dumb and Dumber" said..."So your sayin' there's a chance!" That is what I cling to when I've been fishing for Musky for 5 days straight without any fish to show for it (like recently...lol)! Don't be afraid of miracles friends!
Do you have any advice that might help me catch musky with a fly rod at this time of year on Silver Lake?

Tiger musky don't typically live past 10-11 years of age. That's the whole idea of planting these lakes with the sterile hybrid tiger musky, they will eventually die off if they don't continue to stock the lake. There is always a chance, but from the amount of fish I have caught and seen caught out of the two lakes locally, a 50 is tough. The issue is that not everyone respect the fish or the rules about the fish and they don't have a very easy life in these two lake locally and getting to that magical number is hard with the pressure they get.

Thanks for the responses Nwkurt1. I need to figure out how to catch any size right now. I’m 1 tiger for 7 days now. Learning about water temps through fall and where they live during the changes. I’m enjoying the adventure! If I shoot for the stars maybe I’ll hit the moon!

You need to learn about moon phases and how/why they feed in those certain windows. I have gone a whole year before with out getting one to the boat so be prepared for the tough side of tiger fishing.
