Well I wouldn't usually post a report for a quick trip, but I had quite the adventure during it. I got to the river at 5:30 looking for silvers. Yesterday a big school went up and I went 1/3 with chrome bright feisty Coho, the fish I caught was a hatchery so I'm sure they are further upstream by now, because there were very few silvers rolling.
After the first few casts I got a massive take and set the hook and SNAP. My brand new fenqick HMX that I got for pink fishing last week snapped. The fish kept pulling, but I couldn't keep the line out of the rocks with only one guide and it rubbed across and snapped. I lost more than half the rod in the river. I was pretty ticked, I was using 8 pound flouro on a rod rated to 15 pound test, there was absolutely no reason for the stupid thing to break.
I hiked all the way back to the car and grabbed my extra rod and went back to the river, effectively wasting 20 minutes.
By the time I got back the bite was on. I caught four or five humpys before I got another massive take that just wouldn't show itself. I thought it might be a nice bright silver the way it was fighting, made several mad dashes downstream and generally got me all excited.
When it finally showed itself, turns out it was just a GIANT humpy buck. 12 or 13 pounds for sure. I really have to start bringing my scale, because I'm sure that I'll get the record at this rate. He was a monster! They are soooooo cool looking, say what you will about the slime, but their mouths grow an extra five inches! Last cast I hooked a nice little footbal sized hen coho, brought it to the bank and it flips off shore in the landing. Meh, plenty of fish in the river for later.
