Fire up the smoker honey, it's pink season!!! Blasted out of work as early as I could get away with to try and beat traffic down to the Snohomish. Well it was a nice try anyway - ended up taking the back roads because of construction on hwy9. Still made it to the river by about 4pm just at low tide. Had a few new things I wanted to try this season, so I was amped to get in and get started. 1st was my rig. I set it up for playing fun and casting distance as I am jigging 1/4oz jigs. 10.6" ML float/drift pole rated 6-12# paired with my trusty old Pflueger President spooled with 8# braid and 6# leader (attached via bloodknot, no swivels). This worked GREAT, I was able to cast my little 1/4oz jig as far as the 3" buzzbomb of the guy next to me! 2nd was my jig - started painting & tying my own this year, so I tied up 50 1/4oz jigs for me and whoever stands next to me and wants to try them. These were great as well! With this combination - I hooked and landed 3 in about an hour. I got my 4th about an 1.5 hours after that. ALL on the same jig and setup! If this keeps up I will have pink jigs for a lifetime! The recipe that was working for me was cast, 5 count after it hit the water and then twitch/reel slack/twitch/reel slack all the way back. Not once did I touch the bottom of the river - so no snags. Ended up with 3 bucks and one hen. Two of the bucks ran about 8# while the other and the hen about 5#. The 3rd thing I wanted to test out was my "Humpy cart". For X-mas I asked for a wagon with pnuematic tires. My wife says "Oh! how nice - to take our daughter for rides in" I said "Uh yeah, sure.." Worked pretty well I thought! So if you see this rig on the bank - stop and say hello! There is a 4th rig I want to try but didn't get a chance this evening. Maybe next time... All 4 fish are in the brine as I type.
hey gringo, i have a quick question, im about to make my fist treck down to the skykomish for pink salmon, and was curious what setup you think i should use. 1- float a dink float with a pink/white jig(anise smelly jelly) or 2- drift fish a pink corkie and pink yarn or 3- cast and retreive a pink spoon.
I would forget about the smelly jelly - don't need it for pinks. Really depends on where you are fishing. Slower/deeper water - either spoons, float/jig, or even just the jig (my preference). Faster/shallower - drift.
yeah im fishing behind the monroe prison, just a slow moving deep stretch of river. so too slow for drifting, perfect for float and jig. but how do you fish with just a jig. i have a bigger head pink jig, do i just toss it out let it sink then slowly retreive while jigging?
Hey Gringo - way to go. Love the 4x4 Red Wagon - swwwweeeeet rig, hope it works well for you. You will need it to haul out all the salmon. He-he. Thanks for the jigging tips above. Sounds like you were in slower, deeper water - would you say you stayed in the top 5 to 10 feet of water with your method? Tired of getting so many snags. That is cool you built up your own jigs too - sound like winners.
