It has been a long time since we fished Sprague Lake and decided to give it a try this morning. The new dock was pulled from the SW launch but looks like a great addition. We started pulling rippin minnows, our old Sprague Lake killer, and I put out a single orange fly with crawler chunk. 10 minutes later the fly got slammed and a bright 20+ inch rainbow went airborne multiple times. It took nearly 10 minutes to land and we thought game was on. An hour of trolling with nothing got us into search mode again. Over the next 4 hours we landed 6 more gorgeous fish in the 18-22 inch range. All great fighters and most went aerial.

Speed 2.0-2.5 MPH, 10-15 FOW. Eventually switched all lines to flies with 1/4 ounce weights ahead of leaders. The weather improved all morning with the wind laying down and temp 65 when we got to the launch at 12:30.

An unbelievable weather day for the second week of November! It also gave us a great half day before returning home to face election coverage.

NICE Looking Rainbows! Never been on Sprague Lake, are those eaters? I heard that the fish don't taste too good out there, but I sure wouldn't mind hooking some nice ones like those.
Thanks for the report and the great pictures.

I am not a trout eater, always catch and release. Sprague fish have 2-4 times the fight that a typical Roosevelt fish has!

fishindoc: Wow. You hit the jackpot. Glad it was awesome fishing for you. I agree. The fish in there seem to be supercharged for sure. I've had some great days there too. Denny

Great looking fish! Those fish look to have quite a bit of heft to them. A great day for sure catching fish like those in the sunshine. Thanks for sharing the report. Dave

I have eaten them before out of Sprague, catch and release would be my choice. The fish were caught in late October and had a musty flavor, not appealing.

Thanks for the report fishindoc. Those Sprague lake fish are really fun to catch, they are such great fighters. We have had a blast catching fish in the past down there.
My opinion is the same as eat-sleep-fish....bend the barbs down and turn em loose! They are not very good table fare. Smoking won't fix it either.

Actually, late Winter and early Spring those fish eat quit well and smoke even better. However, I always clean my fish ASAP and put them on ice prior to departure for home. Right now...I just don't know; me, I'd be tempted to try one, but the rainbows out of Lake Roosevelt are always the best.

Good point T-Bone! Clean, or at least bleed, them immediately and that's no matter where you catch 'em. Ensures best table quality regardless whether you eat them fresh, canned, or smoked. :-)
