Went out to Cranberry Lake at Deception Pass today. The fishing was good, the actual catching could have been a little bit better. I just could not get that last fish for a limit to the net today. Had 8 fish on to get my 4.
I arrived at about 6:45 and was fishing by 7. Ran my standard gear on both lines, Mack's 4 inch dodger, 14 inches of leader to a size 6 green Doc Spratley fly. Downrigger line went anywhere from 5 feet to 25 feet in the one deeper hole there. The other line had 1/4 ounce of lead. Speed that got the strike was 1.25 - 1.5. Surface temp was right around 66.
The lake is full of salad. Many times I was reeling the lines in to remove the stuff. Fish today were 13-15 inches. I did have one good hard takedown that completely bent the rid in two and line started immediately peeling off of the spool. Of course before I could even get the rod out of the holder, it was gone. I never even got to feel the fish. Based on the way the rod bent, it was definitely a good fish. Bummer!
It's a neat little lake. The restrictions on gas engines keeps the boat traffic down significantly. Often there are lots of shore anglers, like today. The chance of a monster brown is what keeps me checking it out every now and then.
