Was driving on mt. loop hwy, so decided to cool off a little from the 90 degrees heat, and stopped by coal lake, had my 5' ultra light GL2 rod with shimano stradic ci4+ 1000 size reel set up with me, so decided to little fishing. Arrived 4:30pm, walked 50feet from the parking lot down to the lake, the temperature noticeable dropped to a perfect 75 degrees, with a light cool almost like air conditioned breeze. North side of the lake was in shadow and east side was still in sun. There was few people swimming on the right side of lake, and on the left there was a guy fishing, I talked to him, if any luck, he replied just one followed his lure, but no takers. So I started to work the east side of lake, with various sizes and colors of kastmasters. I would sink the lure for 8 seconds give or take depending on size of the lure, right away had a hit, after 10 casts or so, started working further down the banks, first cast and again a hit, but no takers, seem the fish was not to aggressive as I had many hits from larger fish in plain sight. There was lots of very small trout fallowing my lure to the shore, couldn't tell if was bows or brookies, they were to small to tell, There were also good amount of chunky size trout hitting my lure, seemed that the bigger trout was actually about 3 feet from shore hiding under rocks, everytime my lure was getting close to shore, the trout would turpedo out of the rock and hit the lure on the side, but no hook ups.The chunkier fish were Brooke trout, they were close enough to see with my polarized glasses. After exhausting the spot, I walked furthest that I could possible walk the east side of lake, where this lake is known to produce fish better. So I switched to a Mepps gold size 1 spinner with a green body & red tail fly, first cast produced a nice colorful rainbow. Quickly snapped a pic and released. So I looked at the time it was 7:30pm, after s nice cool down, I needed to go, I packed up my gear and called it day, I'm sure if I had stayed at that producer spot, that I would have caught more, but i didn't have time to even do a second cast, after catching that bow. By the time I got back to the northside of lake, the fish started to boil. Oh well next time with my fly rod, Besides I didn't expect much as this lake, Brookies and bows are small 8-10" and smaller.
