I had the pleasure of fishing with my fishin' buddy Bob Johansen today. We decided to try Spencer since it has some decent LMB in it and (bonus) I could get some video for a future production.

After a pleasant evening of rum and coke and good conversation, we got up this morning at 4:30 AM, had some breakfast and coffee and with great anticipation drove over to Spencer. The weather could not have been nicer - moderate temps, little to no wind, and partly to mostly sunny.

I had my five rods set up with various gear, from plastics, to crank baits, drop shot, and rattletraps. I was geared up! Bob had his usual two go to rigs - a floating rapala minnow and a jig.

We covered the lake from the boat launch and back again. Some fun moments were provided by the trout, including a very decent 18" rainbow I caught on a crank bait. I also lost one in the 14" range. Didn't the lake know we were targeting bass???

Anyway, the bass were not cooperating today. We caught a few dinks, and Bob got a SMB and a perch, both species he wasn't aware were in Spencer. I hooked several dinks but neither of us got any bass of size. It did seem like reaction baits were working better (on the dinks, LOL). Best colors were green and rainbow patterns.

In any case, it was great to fish with Bob again. Last year we missed each other for fishing trips, but I'll need to get out with him again this summer. At 84 years old he remembers things I long ago forgot, like "you caught your 3 pounder under that dock on a jig, when we last fished this lake five years ago". SAY WHAT??? What a memory!

That's a nice rainbow! So good of you two to leave some bass for my next trip there! And if we can get those perch to grow a little .. I sure miss catching (and eating) perch!

Spencer has some real wall hangers in it. Honestly! I've seen many huge bass swimming its clear water, and two I know would have gone close to 10 lbs. Though I knew about the perch in that lake, I didn't know there were smallmouth. I'm quite sure a bucket biologist was behind that. But Spencer Lake's clear water and rocky bottom is a perfect lake for smallies.

Hey Mike - It wasn't 5 years ago we fished Spencer - more like 8 years - May 2005. And, that cove you mentioned was the area that has so many pads now -- And where we had lunch.
Oneshot - I;was using Power Pro braid when I landed that monster on a crankbait. I had 30 pound Power Pro on the Jig rod and hooked it onto an underwater log. Had to cut it off - It is strong enough to pull a lunker out of a pad field and pull lilies up by the roots.
