Couldn't believe the fishing was lousier than yesterday. Schools were few and far between, and just couldn't connect when they rolled through. Fished eyeballs and maggots without luck. Drilled holes all over the north end of the lake even to the area adjacent to the road - No fish. Took home 2.5 fish (0.5 for the dink I kept for an eyeball). Thought small jigs and maggots would be key, but wasn't the case for me. Fish just seemed to be well-fed and not really interested in hitting; The school would run in, take a look at my jigging rap, maybe take a nibble, but no hard bites. Ice is holding up, but freaked me out walking to deep water as it was cracking all over with each step near shore. While sitting on the ice near shore (the road), ice would constantly crack and shift under my seat; Was too disconcerting to stay (not that there were any fish). While drilling near shore a huge crack spiraled out from my auger at one point. One thing's for sure - not gonna be the first guy out on the ice tomorrow. Gonna retie my jigs and rethink the rigs; Maybe tie up a dropper fly/scud onto the jigs.

Yeah, the last couple days have been tough, unless you happen to drop into a good hole. Some of my usual areas that produced well, to the tune of a dozen fish or more, gave up nothing today. For reasons I don't understand, there are a couple areas where guys can almost always get strikes and/or catch fish. Miss these hot spots by just 20 feet and you can be an outsider looking in! Makes me wonder if there's a bit of structure there, a muddy or gravel bottom, or a natural channel just a few feet deeper where fish cruise or concentrate. The drawback is these areas are under the thinnest ice and make me nervous at times. See you down there again, Jay K!
