Went to Coal lake on june 31, 2010 and stayed for two days. The Lake is less than 100 yard off the road, which is convienient. I fished that day after we set up camp, i caught 4 8" Eastern Brook, threw two back. got more bites than that, i was using pink (shrimp flavored) marshmellows. I caught most of them by fishing the bottom, i tried a bobber, got a few bites, didnt reel anything in though, the next day i just relaxed around the camp. It was a nice trip.

Did you take the very short hike into either Pass lake, ( about 100 yards up the road past coal) or into Independance lake? Independance is a very nice lake at the end of the coal lake road. trail is about 1/2 mile. The lake has bigger fish than Coal.

No i didnt hike up to the other lakes in that area, i know of them though, we had too much gear with us, first time camping in 14 yrs, i think i might try Lake Evan and Border lake next weekend. Any tips on good lakes to fish at with a short hike for weekend camping? I live in Granite Falls.
