Had a wild hair and decided to go and see if Coal lake had thawed out. Of course I saw that it had, but there is still A LOT of snow around the shoreline. The whole campsite side is with snow. If you hadn't been there in the past couple of years, about 2 years ago the road washed out about 1/3 the way up. I was prepared to hike it,, but could not believe my eys when I saw that they had filled it in with rock boulders and completly fixed it. It is driveable all the way up.
I don't know what I was thinking, but I did not bring my waders. I spent 60 seconds in my float tube and shorts..... got out!! water was probably just above freezing with glacier run off everywhere. I threw Vibrax silver/gold spinners from shore. Had no bites or follows. Was rather surprised. Last year in about July the Eastern brooke were everywhere. A little cold water still.
On a side note: returned to my car which was about 4 miles up a the forest service road on the mountain. New Subaru Outback is only 6 days old. I've got warning lights going off everywhere, car is stuck in Park, no brake lights, etc. etc. I freaked. Eventually got it into gear and limped home.
Turns out that U-haul wired my hitch to the wrong circut, and it blew all the tranny electrical fuses or something. Of course that defaults the warranty, so I have to fight U-haul to get re-embursed.
