I have not reported since 4/25/09, in part because at least one party was upset that I post too often on Rock, so I will combine several weeks into one report. LOL

Rock Lake has been very good this year, if you have the talent to fish it right. Case in point, my son and I saw one gentlemen that was as happy as can be, cleaning out a stringer of 8 or 10" rainbows at the launch. We saw one boat of two gentlemen that had a stringer of fish that were probably 2 to 3 pounds average - probably two limits. So, fish can be caught. The two of us caught and mostly released 33 fish today, with the largest Brown at 7 pounds 11 onces, the smallest fish, a rainbow, at 8". Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, if you keep a limit and the largest has one or more "catchable" rainbows in the stomach, did you actually go over your limit. LOL

I have been reluctant to give our technique openly to the public, not just because I am naturally possessive of my fish, but also because my method is not that easy to do. Another case in point, two weeks ago I took my normal partner out with his son. His son used our lures, fished as best he could to our directions, and caught only two fish. I caught at least 15 fish on that day, and his dad did almost if not as well as I did. Fishing success is not just a matter of if the fish are bitting, but rather or not you can place your offering in front of them. If you have not done well at Rock Lake this year, don't be surprised, it is a tough lake to learn. Nevertheless, the fish are there, and if you try different methods, learn from each trip, you too will do well. In short, don't get stuck in a rut. To catch fish this last Saturday, we used at least a half dozen lures each, each with a different color combination, and in the end, the only pattern was that the pattern changed as the sun went across the sky.

The water temperature is warming up. Most of the lake now reads about 54 degrees as of Saturday. The carp are spawning at the outlet shallows, so bowhunters go for it. The water clarity is also improving but Rock will remain green for most, if not all, of the summer now. Still, a floating minnow cast and retrieved could often be seen for most of the retrieve, so clarity is indeed improved.

I marked a lot of fish at the 25 to 35 foot range, so I expect that deeper trolling will pick up soon. Nevertheless, with the warmer water comes a desire to switch lakes, so this may be the last report for this year on Rock from me.

I caught some macks a week ago on deer and was asking the limit question my self since he had 8 rainbows in his belly LOL. Great job getting out there and figuring out some consistant patterns.

I talked with a friend today. He had a great day catching browns at Rock Lake. He trolled frog colored #7 flat fish with leaded line. He figures he was down 30 to 40 feet. You might give that a try if you're having trouble at The Rock.

Were there any particular areas where you saw the carp? I'm heading to Rock this weekend...mainly for fishing, but my bow is always close at hand. :)

The carp are located in all of the little bays, but near the launch, just south, they are spawning and creating quite a lot of noise. The land is private, but if you take a boat, then get out but stay in the water, it is legal. A hint on sticking spawning carp. Notice that they create quite a bit of noise as they chase the female around. When you get to your spot, take your hand and creat a lot of noise in the water, then get ready because the males will come to you!

Thanks for the info...we found quite a few of them. I wish I would have read your trick about slapping your hands on the water before I went. We would see them flopping around but whenever we got close they would swim deep. We still managed to get a few of them though. :)

Fishing was also good...we caught 18 browns in a few hours. Nothing of any size, the biggest was a little over 20 in. We released all but a few. All in all a great day at the lake.
