Spent the weekend up at Merrill and fished all 3 days. Got a total of 5 for the weekend ranging from just over 12" to a really nice 23". All rainbow and looked very healthy. Trolled sinking line with various patterns but wooley buggers seemed to be the ticket this time. Purple & brown with a bit of flash worked best. Lake was of course high and the wind kicked up at times blowing the pontoons around but a very fun weekend. Water temp was 54 degrees. One small correction in the header info is that fish over 12" must be released.

If I'm not mistaken, there is a one-fish limit in effect at Merrill as well. Also, (and it sounds like you were fishing with the right equipment) Merrill is restricted to "fly gear only" which doesn't mean fishing with a spinning rod and a bubble. Unfortunately, I've seen many people abusing this reg., probably out of ignorance. Hopefully, Merrill will remain a good fly fishing lake for years to come.

Hey, has anyone else ever seen that monster fish there? I don't know what it is (probably a sturgeon) but it scared the bejeebers outta me and my partner one day. Came right up to the surface about 100 yards away from our boat and made one of the biggest swirls I've ever seen! NO THIS ISN'T A LOCH NESS STORY!!

Thanks for the report ricka.
