Took my kayak out for a quiet morning on Square Lake. I checked it out the day before and it looked like it might hold some fish. Got there around 7:30 and launched, heading off around the lake to check out the bottom topography with my sonar and look for good place to find some fish. Unfortunately, the water from the shoreline out to about 100 yards was consistently only 2 to 3 feet deep with scattered lily pads and thick weedy vegetation covering the bottom. Once the pads stopped, the water dropped quickly to around 20 feet. The dropoff looked like a good spot, but nothing I tried (dropshot, shallow/deep/lipless crankbaits, Texas-rigged black trick worm/green lizard, black jig) brought forth any fish. I couldn't locate any significant structure or cover in the deep water (other than the dropoff) and there were only a handful of laydowns around the bank in 2 feet of water. The only fish I caught (three ~ 8-10 inchers) came on a floating Rapala minnow in silver/black back and a Strike King Red Eye Shad in Sexy Shad in between the pads near shore . It was a nice, quiet lake though and I was the only one there until about a half hour before I left at noon. A relaxing morning, all in all.
