Took my boys out this evening hoping to find a muskie or two for them. We grabbed a boat from the tweaky guy at Rubies and headed out a rowin' like mad. My oldest boy caught several largemouths while using a perch shad rap. We were in about 6 feet of water out in from of Rubies. Then my youngest boy had a muskie hit his bluegill shad rap while we were farther East, but still working along the N. shore. He lost it after a brief fight because he's just a pup and can't quite set them hooks yet. He loved it though and was chattering on about all the way home. We moved out along the bar that runs south from the shore and I managed to pull in a little muskie. He was a little fella, just barely snoot hooked, I managed a quick pic and let him shake off while the boys watched. He hit a firetiger kickin' minnow.
We meandered around the area for a while and talked with some folks looking to catch trout. I told them the best times for trout were an hour before and after sun-up and sun-down. Those trout are boiling all over the place where there is water deeper that 20 feet. A wedding ring with a worm trolled behind you nice and slow always worked for me when I wanted to catch a big brown. Small rapala's in rainbow also worked good, the browns love to eat rainbows.
After some more rowing we wound up down by the launch and I hooked another muskie on the kickin' minnow. This one was really shallow, only in a foot or two of water hiding in the weeds. I let my little guy reel him in and he did a good job. I grabbed a head shot of this one, a bit over 30", and released it. The sun was setting so we called it a day and rowed back.
This time of year the larger muskies in silver are in the deeper water adjacent to their summer time homes. If you fish in the weeds look for green, healthy weed patches. They are still producing oxygen and attracting snacks for the larger predators and will continue to hold fish as long as they are green. Most of my time is spent on the deep weed edges and on weed points that drop into deep water. Rocky area's are still holding fish, and the two prominent ones in the lake will have active fish on there deep water sides most of the time.
Please release 'em to fight another day.

How you catchin all them musky? I seen your reports from earlier this year and everyone says they are so hard to catch. But you seem to be doing it pretty easy. You got a secret weapon or something? I been fishing the bass over here for a while and I checked out silver last week. Caught a couple doing like you wrote earlier so I figured you got the handle on this lake. What's your favorite lure for the musky in silver?

Lure selection should be based on the water depth the fish are using. Spring and fall call for different lure selections to work the cover the fish are using effectively. I usually start with 4 rods rigged with different baits. I throw the fastest moving bait first and work my way to the slowest moving one looking for a pattern. First one is something quick like a bucktail, second one is something a little slower like a spinnerbait, next is almost always a swimbait and finaly a suspending dive and rise jerkbait. I base my color selection on water clarity, if I don't move any fish at my first couple of stops then I change colors. Right now with the water being dark green I like brighter lures and a little bit bigger ones too. Spring and early summer I prefer natural colors and black. Hands down favorite on Silver are swimbaits. They can be worked shallow or deep, fast or slow and the muskies like em. I hope that helps, send me a p.m. if there's anything else.

Great report muskie guy! Thanks for posting so many details on how and where to find them. We have never fished for muskies but have been wanting to give it a try. You have us rethinking our weekend plans for walleye fishing. How old are those boys of yours? Years from now they will remember those fishing trips with their dad as some of the best times of their lives. In my case it was my grandpa and I still think of him and those days long long ago ever time I go out.

I hope more guys are getting their kids out on the lake you are. I am the east side public relations contact for Washington State's first Muskies Inc. Chapter, #57- NWtiger pac. I hope that some of the details in my reports will help more people try the tiger fishing, and if anyone wants anything they can send me a personal message on this site. I know there is a lot of misinformation out there about muskies, mostly rumors that get crazier each time they are told. I always take my first time muskie angler's to Silver, it's as close to a sure thing as you'll find in muskie fishing.
I think it's lame that people will post a report and not share any information. The more people fishing, the more state dollars spent on improving the fishing.
If you get out this weekend to Silver try trolling deep diving crankbaits along the East shore, out on front of the stumps in 15 to 30 feet. And you can do the same on the West shore in front on the tall rock wall and all the way back N. to the launch. Your walleye baits will work fine and don't forget a steel leader. And post a report too, good fishing.
