The terrestrials have landed!!
I fished the afternoon from noon to 5PM...
About 1PM the splashy surface feeding begin...not heavy but all over the lake.. deep water and shallow.
Interesting as the rises really get active while the wind is up and there is chop...but would continue as the wind died down.
Big flying ants was the target insect. There were also small 3/4 inch grey/black beetles.
The ants are over an inch long and with long smokey colored wings. Temp today was in the low 80's.
I would wind drift with a sinking line and a #10 sparrow and await the areas of surface feeding. Then I'd anchor and use my dry fly rod with ants or black caddis. Though I caught some on the surface , I did the best with the sinking line and the sparrow.
A sparrow is a wet fly tied with pheasant feathers...marabou for the tail, some dubbing for a body and then a brown back feather hackled and a head tied with aftershaft feather. I was using about a size #10.
Beautiful day... lost another trout to the eagle...about 10 feet from the boat. Amazing!
But I caught and released about a dozen today...not bad for me.
Most fish were in the 10-12" size and really strong fighters...
