The "main menu" is on every single page of the site. It doesn't matter if you're on the website or in the forum, the Login link is in the same place on every page.

or the link to the 'Board index'?

if I 'log on' on one page, and it only logs me on for 1/2 the web site, and if I'm on a different page, and log on, it'll log me on to the other 1/2 of the web site, just how do I figure all that out? Not to mention, regardess what page I'm on, and I log out, it'll log me out of all pages, forums, and both halves of the entire web site.


so, tell me which page to be on to log off, which seems like any/all page/s. then which page to be on to log on so I can be logged on for the entire web site, and stay on.

Know 2 things. Logon button. Logoff button. Use them on any page.

here's the deal... the forum and the website are 2 separate entities that can't really share cookies. the "website" cookie is driven by the existence of a forum cookie. If you are logged into the forum, it logs you into the website. it does not work the other way around.

to log on they don't cooperate and you log onto only 1/2 half of the thing, say the web site. to log onto the forum you have to log on from some other page.

so to be logged onto both sides with just one log in procedure, which page would that be from?

I'll give this one shot, but I really can't spend more time on this subject.

The website is a .NET Application. The Forum is a PHP application.

They each have their own cookies. When you login, it's on the website. It drops 2 cookies. One for the forum and one for the website. this is recorded in the forum database. When you return to the website, or the forum, they both look for the presence of the forum cookie. The data in the cookie allows both the forum and website to lookup who you are and if your session is expired in the database. If your session is still active (i.e. the time for your cookie expiration has not expired) your cookie and database entry are refreshed.

If you go to the website first, it does the same thing, but adds another cookie that is a .NET cookie. This cookie defines your UserID and Role in the website. it allows the .NET code to lookup who you are and act accordingly. If the website doesn't find a forum cookie, it removes the website cookie so you're logged out, which would match your logged in state on the forum. if it finds a forum cookie and no website cookie, it creates a website cookie and away you go.

The problem as I see it, is that the forum is not establishing permanent cookies, so it logs you off, and the website follows suit.

WHERE this is happening, and why, and for which browsers, is still something I'm tracking down.

FYI, you need know NONE of this to use the site. It's seamless to the end user.

Yeahhhhh, not really seamless.... Not yet anyway...
I know it will get better but it is pretty frustrating at this point. I imagine it is worse for you.

yup, kicked off this morning

makes no difference which page I'm on when I log on, the so called 'web site', or the 'forum' pages

so screw it

I'll just have t log on 4 times a day, and go thru 3 pages to get from log-on, to page back to the active topics every time I try to log on

doesn't happen with any other web page that I'm on every day, all day, and didn't happen with the other software

lol Ok, I have no idea what's going on. Thanks. Heck I can't even find the feature on this web site where I can delete the cookies, so I deleted them ALL from, my computer, didn't help. Thankyou. I'll be in a better mood later today, or tomorrow after I do some fishing. What with my stomach hurting for the past week, and having a kidney stone messing with me for a week and a half, I'm not in a great mood lately, sorry :-)
