pattern help

I just got me a new fly rod and really have no clue what kinda flies i need (other than trolling woolly buggers). I live in pierce county and mainly just wade into the lakes and fish around the weed lines or rocky bottoms. Ive caught a couple bass and want to get into steelhead and salmon in the rivers to.

I went to the library and got books on different flies to tie. All types. The book I have now shows:
Clouser minnow, The Shineabou Sunfish, The Hare Waterpup, The Carrot Nymph, The SMP, Fur Leach, Lefty's Deceiver. Several others.Right now you might even get trout on them.

There are lots for Steelhead and Salmon. I made up an intruder fly and it intrudered on a stick on the Skookumchuck River and remained there.

Parachute Adams, small and large chironomids, a Doc Spratley and a "partridge and orange" will, like the wooly bugger, allow you to roughly imitate most fish food. But you will catch far more if you can look at the insect life swimming around your boots and buy (or tie) really exact imitations. Every lake is different, every week of the year - and that's a big part of the fun of fly fishing: to see the fish chasing some fly and go, "Hey! I have one of those in my fly box!"

Good times, can you post a link to these two flies being tied, I would love a youtube or video to watch of them.

1. The Pink Taco (fish taco variation)
2. Black Pick Yer' Pocket

Searching for either came up with some interesting results. The "Pick Yer Pocket", about every color under the sun but black and about every variant of the old game. So take your pick I spotted five or so videos right off the bat on a rather specific search. So you're on your own for that one. As for the Taco.... hummmm.... I really have to think the request for a video was more to get folks to mount (pun intended) the search, knowing exactly what sort of trash would come back. Yes trash, no budget and no imagination. If you're actually looking for porn, which I can only guess after reading some of your other posts, I could send you down the right avenues but as this is a PG forum it would have to offline. Was their shock value? Not really for me, maybe for some, I'm not to easily shocked by much of anything. Fishing forum = Yacking about fishing stuff. Porn Forum = Well you know. Now, I have had the two cross on Storm Lake when the gal was working out of her home there.... Oh that's another story. Here's your Pink Taco:

To be 100% the link was from another site with the imbedded YouTube, they called it “Fish Taco in Pink", please see your request. Both of them look like pretty cool fly's and I may just have to take a stab at them myself. I watch the vids and tie the fly’s before hitting the sack after a night shift. Those intruderish fly’s you posted in another thread have got me going too, guess I'll have to go get me some of them cock hackles in various dyes.

Now to be honest Duncan, you knew what sort of results the search would return as I'm sure you've been searching too..... All in good fun.

Hey Spokey9, I was new to fly fishing last year. I watched a lot of youtube vids and started tying my own flies. I fish about 300 days a year and have been having a great time fly fishing. This is a website that has helped me more than i can say...

One simple rule is to match the hatch, I know that gets said a lot but its true. When I first got started a guy at gig harbor fly shop told me to pick a lake and learn it, where the fish are and more important whats going on under the water. It turns out this was great advise... maybe I'll see you on the water.... Good luck and have fun... Chris

Here you can find a picture of a fish taco fly. Replace any or all materials with shades of pink, and what do you have? This fly has the trailing hook. Like was mentioned by the original author of the pink t.

I should add, the fly is 2.5" long. Designed for Salmon and Steelhead.

For rivers the pink fish taco youtube fly looks about right, as well as the black pick yer pocket for swinging flies. Lots of fun to fish. Honestly though, you'll catch as many fish on a tuft of yarn properly presented as a fancy fly. In low clear water I like to use a smaller spey style fly, which will be easier to cast too. I've caught a lot of fish on a buggy looking fly with a purple, pink or red marabou tail with black saddle hackle and dubbing to match with a bead head or just a big pink thread head. But I've found that it really doesn't matter much about the style or the tying expertise, it's the way it's fished that will get you strikes.

For lakes, match the hatch. Wooly buggers work great as a trolling fly, or stripping it in, a mosquito will never go wrong for a topwater.
