Hoodsport - Hood Canal Fishing Opportunities?

Post by p_sherman » Sun Jul 24, 2016 7:57 pm

Hi guys,

I'm relatively new to fishing... only getting out there at the end of the pink run and hooking up with a good amount of coho off shore whidbey island last year. I'm completely oblivious to most things fishing. As a result, I was wondering if anybody could recommend how/where to fish for salmon in Hoodsport (about halfway between Lilliwaup and Hoodsport), specifically the second weekend of August. My family is renting out a cabin over there, and I'd love for the opportunity to go after some fish during our weekend getaway!

If anybody could steer me in the right direction as to how I can improve my chances of getting hooked up with salmon (or anything!!) in that area (tackle, method, etc.) I would really appreciate it!

The place were renting has a private beach and whatnot, so I'd imagine being somewhere on shore if I were to fish from where we are staying. We also have access to 2 small kayaks, but I've never been in one and I'm not sure how I feel about trying to fish in one.

Thanks for any feedback!

Im not the best person to answer this, but I would say probably around the hatchery will be your best bet.

However, be sure to check the regs carefully for what you can keep and what you cant and exactly where you can fish, gear rules etc. Be sure to check the on-line emergency rules for that area as well. This is a very unusual year and rules are changing almost on a daily basis.

Too early for most. I'd try crabbing. Buy a crab pot and access it from your kayak. Would make your family happy to eat fresh crab.

If you must fish, try cutthroat trout. Area is known for good cutts. Not sure if you can keep them this year.

Later I've heard the upper Canal will be one of the few spots open for coho and kings. It won't help on your trip and you'd need a powerboat.

Sea-run cutthroat have been catch-and-release since the late '90s. They're still a lot of fun though!
