Fish Taking a Look at You

Post by fishtremble » Fri Oct 16, 2009 9:57 pm

Hello all,

I was fishing at Carlisle Lake from the bank, with a bobber. The bobber was only about eight feet from the bank. This fish, I think it was a trout, pops up, kind of like a whale does to look around. It popped up for a second in a vertical position, right next to the bobber. Looks directly at me. I've never had that happen to me before. Just wondering if anyone else had experienced something like that before.

Well maybe it's a little different, but I thought it was kind of weird how some of the Pinks in the Snohomish river this past month would swim toward you in a vertical position with basicly their head out of the water. Of course they they are half wacked out on near death, not behaving in the norm. But it looked really strange.

It's been observed that bull trout/dolly varden poke their heads above the water to get a better view of an obstruction when attempting to migrate upstream. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that the fish was just getting a better view of the situation. I've seen sturgeon do this as well while I was shad fishing on the Columbia, creepy to see an 8 to 10 footer poke it's head up and look around.

Also, when trout and other fish feed off of the surface the do so very gently. They usually just poke their nose up for a brief second or two and slurp stuff off the top really softy. This may have been the behavior you witnessed. Usually full on jumping is not feeding.
