Noodling/Grabbling for catfish

Post by fishnislife » Fri Jul 20, 2007 11:25 pm

I've been working with this guy from Kansas City, Missouri and we were talking fishing. We'll besides bass fishing, nooding/grabbling catfish came up. He said it is something you do with a bunch of buddies when you've had a couple (ok a lot) of beers. Kind of like cow tipping around here I guess.
I would consider doing it without the drinks. But I'm sure they couldn't hurt.
Have any of you guys done this?
Have you ever heard of it before? If not check out the links below, they will blow your mind.

Here is a couple of cool links:

Seen it on TV but I don't think it's something I'd be to interested in. It's that whole wallowing in the mud thing.

I saw it on Dirty Jobs. I think you have to wear blue jean cut off shorts, one article of camo, and a mesh hat to do it properly.

Noodling isn't legal in many states. I know Oklahoma and Texas allow it. I too saw the Dirty Jobs episode on noodling. Those southern cats are huge.

When I first heard about this I went nuts, I remember getting on the phone and calling most of my buddys and my dad. Of coarse none of them believed me LOL. But when I first heard about it it was in this old book from the 70s I, and they talked about doing it in Florida...... uhh.. GATORS. Yeah that alone got me kind of nervous. But they say from time to time a musk rat or a beaver will light you up if you stick your hand in the wrong place AKA their nest

Noodling actually sounds kind of fun. As a conservationest though, I don't think I could participate. Those big male cats are typically sequestered like that because they're guarding/fanning their eggs. I haven't really looked into it but I assume besides the danger-to-human risk of having a beaver chomp your face off (like that second link refrences), states have banned it because it can't be great for trophy catfish populations. Again, I have no actual data to back up what I'm saying here, but it seems like even if you release them there's a good chance the scuffle scattered their eggs. I suppose if you knew when they were going to spawn the conservation-minded angler could try there luck before then. Although the action would probably be much, much slower.

I'm from the 'burbs on the Kansas side... small world. Although I've never done it myself, I have had more than few and watched some friends do it.

Man O" Man being from Kentucky that is one of the favorite past times noodling is great. Although I wouldnt do it here because far more fish have big teeth in these waters than back home in Kentucky. I prefer waders over cut off blue jean shorts, we usually go in the creeks back home because channel cat's are everywhere if there is water you can bet that catfish are in it. You just run your hand under logs, rocks into holes in the side of the bank and feel around until you feel the rough gums of the catfish's mouth and run your hand briskly into his mouth and either flip them up into the boat or on the bamk side. You can bet after a night of this your hand is gonna be pretty cut up. Although if you do reach under and feel something hard get your hand out of there fast because a turtles mouth is way harder than a fish's.

felts- that's freak'n hilarious! I remember one of the times my buddy was doing it and started flipping out from the vice grip-like feeling he had on his thumb. Turned out his thumb was about to be dinner for a snapping turtle... we got a huge laugh and he got four stitches and a tentanus shot. From that point forward they started wearing gardening gloves.

............... That! You can call me a whimp, but I def. don't go for that kind of stuff. I mean, picking up crawfish off the bottom is the limit!

Yet another slip up by "thepro". I can barely pick crawfish off the bottom. But it does sound fun.

LOL you missed a few things though. Your name has to be either Jed, Jeb, or Cletus. Last and most important you have to be married to one of your relatives.

No way not me I would not do it! Me and my buddy caught a Snapping turtle the size of a garbage can lid once and that thing would have removed fingers maybe a hand! Not to mention the other creatures that will put a hole or poison in you! But it sure is funny to watch a couple of rednecks go for it!!! Well maybe I lied I checked out those links and I might go grabblin with with a lady! LOL
