POWERBAIT vs. SALMON EGG

Post by gpc » Tue May 01, 2007 11:50 pm

I know eggs have been around since day one and have sold some 83 million jars of just one brand but it seems that I have been using mostly powerbait in the last couple of years. ther are a bunch of diffrent colors and is now coming up with diffrent flavors, and now they have power eggs that look somewhat like real eggs but float a lot better and I use those with powerbait and it works even better. Im just curious as to what other people think about this topic

If you wanted to catch a quick limit of stockers I think power eggs would be the fastest way.

Salmon eggs. I banned all powerbait products 5-6 years ago.

I let the fish decide. Some days (or hours) they prefer the paste baits, other times the old egg and worm sandwich floated up by a mini mallow works better for me.

hey mossy, just wondering the reason why you through out powerbait, because I really feel that I am giving up on eggs. I still try every time I go out but I spend a lot more time trying powebait. Fishing take cofidence to take fish just like when when Im going for crappie and can only use a white 1/64 oz. even though the other colors work just as well for other people, but when I switch colors I dont have confidence in that lure so every fishless second goes by 10x slower and I switch back to white. I think this might be the problem that Im dealing with here. Any tips for me?

Hi all I don’t want to sound cocky here but I think the problem with a lot of anglers is once they find something that works they don’t try new stuff and disregard what hasn’t gave them the best results. I used to get skunked when I fished this way but now I try to think outside the box and work with the fish and time of year and have had great success ever since. Don’t get me wrong a mellow and worm problem will be the best bait ever for almost any fresh water species but it won’t always work (yea right). So then we try trout crack (power bait), eggs, lures, and so on but still no luck so we say oh there just not biting. I now find the term not biting funny because they still need to eat but I do agree the bite may be slow. So when I say to work with the fish this means I must first locate them on a body of water and find out what water column they are feeding in. Now back to the trout crack and eggs. I have fished both of these more times then I can remember but have never had much success with power bait but I still fish it on occasion. However I have caught a ton of fish on an either 1 or 2 eggs on a small gold egg hook. But if I was fishing this bait for say 1/2 hour and no luck then maybe I would switch power bait at a different depth no luck there maybe the mellow set up and so on until I could draw a strike. It reminds me of a time I was shore fishing Rufus and every one was throwing out power bait with short leader. For some odd reason every one was catching fish with there set up but me and one other guy. I decide to switch up tried bobbers, eggs, worms and mellows, and ect with no luck. I wasn’t going home skunked so I dug deeper the night before we had cooked some corn and there was still some in the pan so I snagged a couple pieces and next thing you know I fighting a 5 lb triploid that I caught on 3 pieces of corn. After that I had continued to fish this set up for 1/2 hour or so with no more luck so I kept experimenting this time with just mellows with out the worm and as long as a leader that I could work with and again fish on. The other guy that wasn’t having any LUCK never switched from his power bait and never caught a fish that trip. I guess your probly starting to get the point that one bait isn’t going to work for every application so as angler we must continue to grow and learn to work with the fish and I feel you will have better success. So don’t give up on any one bait just remember it wont always work so be prepared and remember to think out side the box.

I agree Jay S: Fishermen do get too caught up using their favorite setup.
Powerbait has always worked for me so I usually stick to it. I don't do much plunking as I'm fortunate enough to have a boat, and I prefer to troll, but yes, sometimes a little change is good when your stuck on the bank. Don't ever give up on a nightcrawler filled with air. There have been occasions when I'll put that out and it will get the big fish of the day.

And certain lakes that I've used powerbait on just don't seem to produce. I can think of a few where I've never done well with powerbait. So I think you have to find a bait/lure that produces at that certain lake.
