sammamish river squawfish?

Post by ckim85 » Mon May 04, 2009 12:28 pm

I've read a couple reports on squawfish in sammamish river. With all the trout i've caught, im looking to catch something different now with maybe alittle more fight.

any tips on where i should hit up on sammamish river and what lures to use for squawfish?
Ive never fished for em and not sure what to expect.

The fish are a garbage fish and are caught really easy. I would use a worm and small corky and plunk or slow drift it. I have caught them on lures but bait is a lot better:-"

no fight on those squawfish? i figured they might give it a bit more fight than the local planters.

but yeah, figured ill take a day and just catch as many as i can and toss them or deep fry them or something.

anyone know if they taste any good at all?

i've caught those guys on snoquamlie using a small chartruese spinner or chrome spoon. I fed them to the coyotes. I think they spit them back at me though #-o

yeah, catch as many as you can then just throw them in the bushes. you're doing our salmon a favor by doing that. good luck!

We pick up squallys on crankbaits working from shallow to deep over rocky ambush spots. They will bite on anything, but cranks that match the local forage fish are absolutely irresistible for the meatheads. Perch print is best here, with white coming in a close second.

Contrary to what everyone else is saying, I have experienced some serious fight in squawfish. They typically are lethargic in the summer, as they prefer a little cooler water. Early spring and late fall they fight like a native trout, flipping and rolling all the way in. They don't jump, tending to stay down low, but they can put on quite a tug for their rather light weight. Once the water warms up, its a 2 headshake and take me to the boat program though, so very lackluster.

Our preferred method for "meat utilization" is to sever the spinal cord and place the fish in locations that local raptors can come down and have a meal.

I agree that they tend to hit on most anything at some point in time.
Some fight really well and others come in like a log. Have fed many to the coyotes and redtails myself.
I caught one last August over below Vantage that I was sure was a huge SMB. It hit a chartruse grub that I'd flipped into the millfoil. No sooner had it hit the water then this fish blasted it. Good fight and had me excited....until I landed a nice 3-4 lb. squaw....biggest one i'd ever caught. At first I was disgusted, but it was the only thing we caught that day, so at least it kept us from getting skunked. I repaid the favor with an all-expense-paid first-class ticket to the nearest sagebrush.

Wow...I remember when it was just a "slough" and not a "river...."

The Sammamish river slough has selective gear rules.
