Fishing books list

When I am not fishing I like to read about fishing. Whether it be a fictional diary/novel or a book of tips and tricks. Barnes and Noble is running out of fishing books for me to read so I would like to hear some of the books that WL.com members have read and recommend.

A good format for me would be something like this...

-Title, Author
-ISBN
-Description/Comments of your own
-Possible Picture

Here are a couple of my favorites...

1.) "Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders" by: John Gierach
ISBN: 0-684-86859-8

This is a collection of forty essays from the famous John Gierach. A great read that kept me entertained and inspired me to seek the high lake cutthroat trout. Easy to read because each essay (or short story) is only 5-10 pages in length. I read a new one every night before bed. Geirach is very ironic and witty with his humor and storytelling. One of my favorite books.



2.) "The Bass Fisherman's Bible" by: Erwin A. Bauer
ISBN: 0-385-24690-0

I pretty much know a little to much about bass fishing thanks to this book. Talks about the history of bass, techniques, how to locate bass, right lures to use and how, even talks about fly-fishing for bass. Great book and a great reference.



...reading these books not only helps me with my fishing but keeps me on my toes mentally. I have noticed that alot of authors will put moral twists on stories that make me think about my own actions. John Gierach's book has definitely inspired me to become a better sportsmen and respect the land we've been given. I am excited to see other's favorite titles.

Another great one that I enjoyed. It is not a fishing book but an ispirational book.

I go every year to a christian camp with about 150 middle-school kids for a week. Two years ago a very dear friend gave me a copy of Wild at Heart just before camp and I got up every day a couple of hours before the kids and sat in the peace of of the Yamhill River and read that book and drank coffee. As the woods came alive each morning God changed my perspective on my whole life through John Eldredge's words. I would recomend this book to every one.

I bought it for my son Christmas of 2006. He hasn't read it yet. There is a companion book written with his wife for girls and women named "Captivating". I bought it for my girls. One daughter said it was one of the best books she ever read. The other hasn't read it yet.

"Wild at Heart" and "A River Runs Through It" were very good. I just finished reading them and recommend them to anyone. "Wild at Heart" was a bit religious but I think would be good to read for non-christians as well. It has interesting insight on the society we live in today and how the "idea" of what a man is supposed to be.

"Into The Wild" - by Jon Krakauer

This book was very inspiring. About a young man who has an ultimate goal of living off the land in Alaska. A non-fiction book. This has also been a motion picture recently and I would recommend seeing the movie first, oddly enough. Very sad, but awesome.



"Backpacking: One Step at a Time" - by Harvey Manning
ISBN: 0-394-72939-0

About backpacking, simply put. Written by a man who has been backpacking since the 1930's. Also one of the first members of REI co-op. Not really great for reading but a great reference. And best of all I found it at Goodwill for $.86!

I read a book maybe every 2 months, sometimes longer.

You really recommend the movie before the book? I was wanting to read it before seeing this movie. Is the movie any good?

Ya I do read a lot, kinda sad. I know. But my roomates are really annoying so I stay in my room alot. Actually their girlfriends are really anoying. So when not fishing or working, I play xbox, tie flies, and read. And it isn't really skimboarding season yet. And at my job, I have alot of downtime, best passed by reading.

As for "into the wild" I would recommend seeing the movie first. Unusual I know, especially for a bookie like myself. The book is basically a report/discussion by Jon Krakauer about whether Chris McCandless was crazy, sucicidal, etc. He puts in a few of his own experiences and compares McCandless to other famous wanderers such as; Everett Rues and John Muir. The book jumps around alot and gives away many parts of the movie. And the movie is quite accurate, so reading the book later didn't piss me off. Plus I had a face/personality for the character.

And yes... the movie was awesome. Very long though. My father didn't find it as good, he said he got over all that crap about authority and life questions a long time ago.

I loved this movie. The ending sucks but I can't complain..its a true story. The scenery was amazing too. Just an all around great story.

My girl's mom gave me a book to read and I absolutely loved it. It's older than I am and the dates inside say that it's the tenth printing as of year 1967, first copywrited 1963. It's from Outdoor Life and called Complete book of Fresh Water Fishing by P. Allen Parsons, Foreword by Ray Bergman. It's obviously old school and they do a lot of talking about worrying about rods and line breaking which is awesome as those problems now aren't such an issue. But some of the pictures, especially some of trout that were in the FIFTY pound range. I've never seen such a thing and the pictures are something else. I love this book, and it's great since it's so old, it even smells like an old book. They go through all sorts of freshwater fishing even covering fly fishing. I love the old school, using info in this book has definitely caught me fish. It also mentions Washington frequently as we had and still have some pretty dang good fishin in these parts....

"SNOHOMISH My Beloved County, An Angler's Anthology" by: Bob Heirman
ISBN: 0-938567-36-5

This is the best book that I have ever opened, hands down. It is a book about fishing in Snohomish county in the "golden years" and the destruction and downfall of fishing since. Mr. Heirman tells of his many years of fishing various Snohomish county rivers and lakes and his extensive preservation of our natural resources. It is just awe inspiring to read about what the fishing was like back in the day. I have read this book from front to back, no less than 20 times and it is just as good as the first time that I read it.
