Quality Backpack Tackle Box?

I'm looking for a nice backpack tackle box. My plano tackle box is just big enough, but too much crap in there. So it gets pretty heavy dragging it all over the place.
I currently have this.


But I removed 1 of the trays, so I only have 2 trays in it. This way, I have more room up on top, to put my powerbait/eggs. They fit perfectly on that front top row.

I like an organized look. So I need some of those clear tackle box thingys for my lures. Also, I would love it to be able to hold my powerbait/eggs securely like my current setup.

Needs to be able to hold my rod holder. It's about ~10-12" longer. It's the one from Joe's.

Then needs to be able to hold additional spools of line, weights and such. Also would love it to be waterproof.

Hoping for no more than $100.

Any suggestions?

search for a fishing backpack on basspro and cabelas, they both have their own brands. Shimano and GLoomis also make some, and some other company i forget the name of at the moment.

My suggestion, trim down. Do you really use all that tackle. You should really only take what you know you are going to use at that particular lake. I carry more than I need in a Plano fannypack (yes, I said fannypack. They're coming back you know). I could go anywhere in the Nation and catch fish out of that thing. You really don't need a lot. Think about what you use the most, what you might try and go with that. Switch stuff out depending on the seasons or species your targeting. I promise 2/3 of your gear doesn't see the water enough to lug it around all the time. This is just me though. Maybe you throw 50 baits in a day.

Flambeau has a nice set. Tackle Station 5005ST 17''x10''x15''. I bought it at Sportsmans Warehouse for $50.00.
You can carry a ton of gear. I take it on the boat and shorline. I'm able to store muskie,bass,trout gear with room left for booze.

Oh ya, backpacks. Look at Joe's, Dick's Online, Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops, I'm sure you'll get an idea once you see enough of them and price them out. Don't forget to look around your local Target and Walmart. Your not looking for anything fancy, just something to hold all you stuff. Z

Swiss Gear makes some pretty cool backpacks that hold a ton and are very economical. I believe Target sells them.

Well, another reason is, I want to free my hands to do whatever.

Looks like the best option is to get a regular backpack or something I like. I see Basspro has a "Browning" fishing pack. Looks decent. But they have 2 different sizes.

Now i'm curious as to what utility box that will hold powerbait/eggs securely. I know a lot of them are very shallow, or the lanes arent wide enough. I'm not familiar with any of the models or brand. And they do not state the inside dimensions.


Oh, while at Sportsman the other day, I found this nice "Fishin' Stix" to prop my fishing pole from the shore. Looks like a big Y, and it extends and retracts. Just hope it's sturdy enough to get pounded into the hard dirt.
Compressed, it's 12" and extends to 30". Only $2 so I didnt mind trying it out.

I use a laptop backpack I got free at conference a few years ago. Every time I go to these, they give you a free one - I had a closet full at one time, so I donated them to a kids backpack drive.

I just cut out all of the padded walls that separated the main compartment from the laptop sleeve. This left a nice squared off area to put the smaller clear boxes in as well as any other stuff. You might hit up some of the thrift stores around - see if you can find one that you can make fit your needs.

Next time I can get to one (shooting for October) I will stock up - (alot of people just leave em in thier hotel room) and offer them up here.

I ordered the Browning backpack from BassPro and just got today.


It's a decent pack. It's big enough to hold a bunch of plano boxes. Has enough outter pockets to hold whatever else. Also, the built in rain-fly thingy is pretty cool. Even though, it should be slightly bigger, to cover the entire pack. Also, the shoulder paddings, are a bit thin for the price. You would think they would give more cushion there. But then again, I dont plan on putting loads of equipment inside.

For about $70, it's a pretty good value.

Oh, I also have no plans to use the bottom pouch. So I removed that. Now there's 4 strips of plastic hanging off the bottom of my backpack. Thinking about cutting those off....

So, If that part wasnt included, and the price reflected it, would have been even better for me.

Also, I'm still looking for a hard container to hold my powereggs/powerbait. I ordered the Plano 3770 thinking it would work. Well, it doesnt. The channels are just a bit too narrow. Very close.

I bought the XPS Stalker bag (w/o wheels) from Bass Pro about a month ago and love it. It is a tad large, but it'll hold everything you could want to have with you. If you don't need to take your entire compliment of tackle you can easily bring your lunch, jacket, and whatever else you may want to have on hand. This bag seems very well constructed and should last quite a while. One bonus of the bag's shoulder strap design is the use of a sternum strap. The cell phone/ipod holder is very handy as well as the water bottle holders (although I use mine for scents.) Although I use the bag primarily in my boat, The times I carried it as a backpack has been pleasant. Fully loaded you will definitely want to take it off between fishing spots as it can get particularly heavy.

This bag is definitely worth your consideration IMHO...:thumleft:

Just reread your post FF... This bag does have loops for a rod holder on either side, two line spooling pockets (could easily hold two spools in each one), and also two external tool holsters.

I have one from cabelas. the big difference from the browning is that it holds one more tray than the Browning.

I just use old backpacks laying around the garage/house. Buy some cheap Plano divider trays and your set...If it's gonna get dirty and smelly, I'd rather it be easily replaceable..
