whats your big bass story

Post by panfisher » Tue May 15, 2007 9:59 pm

mothers day i went over to a pond in the yakima area with some others for some fun, we were looking for crappie, fishing with jigs with not much luck when a huge largemouth inhailed my jig had a long battle and almost lost it because of some willow trees. the bass was 22" certfied at 8lbs,4oz. biggest landed so far. last year i was fishing a lake by quincy and hooked a big bass (5LBS +) when this other bass comes out of depths to see what all the commotion was about. that one was easily twice as big as the one i had on(but lost). and certainly bigger than the 8+ i landed. state record? could be, seen my share of big fish. whats your big bass story? <')//<

My big bass story happened last Aug at Newman Lake. It was 95 degrees and I was just drinking beer watching my 4 year old catch perch with just a hook and warm, when his drag started smoking. He pulled in a 4lbs+ largemouth. Moral of the story....drink more beer? Nope, sometimes the easiest step up catches fish

I'M SO GLAD I GOT TO WITNESS THAT FIRST HAND. IF YOU WANT I COULD PROBABLY EVEN ADD PICTURES TO YOUR STORY BECAUSE THAT WAS A WELL DOCUMENTED MOMENT....

I dont really fish for bass. Sometimes Ill go for bass when the lake is doing real well for bass and the trout or walleye arnt biting. This is more of a weird story than a big bass story. When I was younger me and my cuz were trout fishing at deep lake (by Olympia). We were using salmon eggs, My cuz got a fish on , well it turnned out to be a lsrgemouth bass. We fought it right up to the shore when it came off. The bass wasnt huge probally 3lb. HUGE when your a kid and I think every time the story was told the fish got bigger and bigger (but thats the case for all fisherman when the big one gets away) LOL. So like I said the fish wasnt huge but has anyone ever heard of catching a bass on a salmon egg?

While unemployed a few years ago I was out "looking for a job" and just happened to have my belly boat in the back of my truck...what are the chances of that! Stopped at Beaver Lake in Skagit county for a little spring bassfishing. Went to the outlet of the lake where the bottom drops off to about 6 feet. Cast a spinnerbait nest to shore and got WHACKED by a huge bass. I could tell it was a nice fish when it started to pull me around in my belly boat. Finally got her in and put her on the bellyboats aprin. She was WAY over the printed ruler on the aprin so I marked her length on the rod I was using. No scale of course. Got home and measured the mark on my rod. 23 inches! Don't know what she would have weighted but I haven't come close to matching that one since.

If you insist, Edgeran........

We were fishing the mouth of a culvert from the bank on the Columbia River at Duroga State Park. It was the morning of my 25th birthday, and God had blessed oue fishing spot with calm water and sunny weather. I was drop shotting with a nightcrawler in hopes of catching a little smallmouth or two, when I felt a huge tug, set the hook, and......snapped the line. Crap! I quickly re-rigged and tossed it back in the same spot. Right away i felt a tug, and he was off to the races! With the help of my buddy, Edgeran, we brought the 4-5lb fish ashore (didn't have a scale). Now the good part..........while taking pictures of this beauty, we noticed my entire drop shot rig (whole nightcrawler and all) still sitting in his mouth!!!!! This bronzeback hog was so aggressive and hungry that he went back for seconds even after being hooked only minutes earlier! We have the pictures to prove it. Check out postings for Lake Entiat in the next couple days - I'll try to post the pics there. (FYI - the fish was released of course)

Great. Now I'm all worked up without a pole in my hand!

Last year in june, I was fishing at round lake with my cousins keith and Kevin and I was using a huge crankbait the size of my palm and the first cast I get a big tug on the pole. For about the first 10 seconds I thought I was snagged because I was jerking and nothing was happening. Then my line took off so I knew it was a bass. After I got it up to the bank it took off a couple more times and I got it in. It was really awesome. The bass was 4 pounds 4oz which is a big one to me because at Round lake it is super hard to catch a bass at all. Plus that is the biggest one that I have caught so far.

I have never caught a bass, and actually don't even know what one looks like. :^o
J/K
Sooo many, where to began. Actually Jmay and gpc's stories reminded me of one. And this may have happened to them.
My buddy was fishing with a spinner for trout when he caught a nice little stocker about 10in. As he was fighting it a bass came up out of the shadows and inhaled the trout! Both of are jaws dropped. He know began to fight the big bass and as he continued you could see the trout backing out of it's mouth. Soon the trout struggled his way out of the mouth of the bass and the spinner was now hooked into the bass. The trout swims off and the fight ensued. Shortly after all the chaos went down he landed the bass and both of us sat there in ahh talking about what just happened. We were so amazed. Actually at that moment I realized that swimbaits were the real deal for big bass. Days later I bought my first Huddleston and the rest is history.
Thanks you guys for bringing back such a good memory.

ohh, btw the bass weighed 4lbs. 8oz.

another story ihave is when i was about 13 i had a friend whose dad did most anything to fish, this was in minnesota at a swim beach in early spring. they had just put out the parks swim raft and being that the water was still pretty cold no one would be swimming yet. the dad(cal) put his chest waders on and put use on his shoulders (one at a time) took us out to the raft gear and all. we set up fishing using live frogs, worms etc. i rigged up a frog set up casting to the deeper end a few cast later as i was bringing the frog up out of the water this huge northern pike comes out of the water grabs the frog and with one huge tug broke off. i was so stuned that had to sit down to calm my nerves. after about 15 minutes i rerigged use another frog. this next cast was along the side that went from shallow to deep, i let the frog sink to the bottom just started to retr ieve when i had a hit that almost took the rod out of my hands. after a good long fight i was able to bring up a smallmouth bass that when weighed went 4lbs, 14oz. (won $50.00 in fishing gear at the local tackle shop.) i was so shaken from the two big fish. that i put away the frogs a fished fo the smaller pan fish. oh! we all had to swim back because a breeze that picked up later that morning blew the raft deeper than cals waders. great fishing memorie. <')//<

I used to live about 10 min from Lake Ray Roberts in North Central TX. One cold January day in 1995 a friend and me were out on the lake in about 30' of water. I tied on a 3/4 oz. Stump Thumper spinnerdait with a big Colorado blade on it. I tossed it in the middle of a dead tree that had a lot of small branches on it, I just let it bounce off the blades going deep. I thought I had hit a snag. The snag pulled back. It was a big bass. I should have thrown it back but just had to weigh it. We took it into Pilot Point to a butcher shop. It weighed 10 1/4 pounds. That was probably the biggest bass I'll ever catch in my life.

Tight Lines

I'll try to scan the pic and post it in a couple days.

THE CLIMAX TO MAGLER'S BIG FISH STORY IS ABOVE. THE PICTURE OF THE WORM ON THE HOOK AND IN THE BASS'S MOUTH WAS TAKEN AFTER REMOVING THE DROP-SHOT THAT WAS USED TO CATCH THE FISH. THE WAY I SEE IT IS THE BASS WASN'T EVEN HOOKED THE FIRST TIME BUT INSTEAD IT WAS HOLDING ONTO THE WORM AND HOOK WITH SHEAR POWER. AFTER SNAPPING THE LINE IT RETURNED TO ITS LITTLE DROP OFF AND FOR THE FOLLOWING 2-3 MINS TRIED TO SWALLOW THE WORM BUT COULDN'T. THEN, ALONG COMES ANOTHER WORM........JUST BOUNCIN ON BY. HMMMM....ANOTHER EASY MEAL.....THE REST IS HISTORY.

***ANY ESTIMATES ON THE FISH'S WEIGHT????? :-k

well my big bass story isnt as grand as any your stories, but my first big bass worth mention was actually this year. i went over to the snake river between oregon and idaho to fish crappie and if any of you like eating crappie thats the place to go. but anyways we got to the snake at around 3 or 4 in the morning. i was fishing catfish while it was still dark and when day break came i saw a lot of action on the water so it thought i'd fish bass for a little bit because the crappie weren't really eating yet. i start off with a jig for about 5 mins, but there was no action at all. i was still seeing a lot of top water action so i thought i'd put on a floating silver minnow (rapala original) on. i was casting it and reeling it and casting it back and forth and still nothing for about another 5 mins. i thought that maybe i was retrieving my line to quickly so i thought i'd slow down and let the minnow float back to the top of the water while i was retrieving it. so i casted it. reeled it back. let it float up top. on my second reel i let it float back up and bam i got a huge it. it actually scared me a little. i'd never had anything like that happen before so i was really excited. that bass put up quiet a bit of fight and when it got closer to shore it start dancing for me. when i grabbed him i saw that it was a pretty big honker. 15 incher smallie and close to 3 lbs on him. this was the biggest bass i have caught so far and has currently sparked my bass love. i hope to catch more worth talking about, but i still have a lot to learn.

Nice smallie. I'll guess 2.8-3lbs.
