yea i think since the rainbows and cuts can cross breed, steelhead (searun rainbows) can cross bread with the cutthroats it is not that weird.

If some of the stuff I read is true it is reported that the Donaldson trout can reproduce. Donaldsons were planted in Lake Wa in the 70's and possibly earlier. Some of these jumbo cutts may be offspring of those plants.

yea, the donaldsen trout genes could have been "watered down" so to speak and can be a more ressesive trait among the trout nowadays. so perhaps 1 in 100 cuttthroats hatched nowadays can have the capabilitys to grow to donaldsen size. i am positive that there can not be any 100% donaldsons nowadays, but their blood can still be running through the gene pool.

I'm glad you posted some head shots as I wanted to see how far the upper lip extended. Those are definitely cutthroat heads. Interesting that they reside on pages of the WSJ.

I may be barking up the wrong tree getting fixated on Donaldson as the source of the big trout in Lake WA. It may be something similar to grizzly bears and brown bears up in Alaska. The brown bear, aka the kodiak bear, is also a grizzly bear with the addition of a much better food source. The brown/kodiak bears are about twice the size of a mountain grizzly.

The Lake WA trout may just be a cutthroat trout that has evolved to grow bigger than it's "cousin" the coastal/sea-run trout beccause of a better food base.

Now if 35 years ago I pursued the college degree I wanted, a fisheries degree instead of a business degree, I'd know exactly what the Lake WA trout are.

I was at the sportsmans show in puyallup and talked to a couple guys from western washington walleye club(creditable people) I had asked a few questions reguarding western walleye waters. They told me that their had been some reports of walleyes coming out of Lk Washington. From the sounds of it,it didn't sound like a large gathering of wallys,just something that was happening on occasions. This question is probably more geared for Kutt or anyone else familar with Lk Washington waters. Are there walleyes coming out?

I know this was suppose to be about the cutts...i just didn't want to start a new post.

it is weird that two of the fish pictures only have spots on the top of their bodies, while one of them has spots all over.

how weird. maybe the one with spots has more of the donaldsen gene that the others. or vise versa i never got to see a donaldsen up close enough to visually analize the features.

i did catch a couple monster donaldsens when i was young out of a friends pond but i was to young to remember, maybe i can find the picture.

Kutt has the fish positioned with it's mouth open. Imagine where the lip would be if the mouth was close. It would be past the eye.

Yeah, landed 2. 16" and 15" released to swim free! Had two other hook-ups but managed to lose them...probably 15" fish...nothing spectacular.

.... but a "lake cutt" can act lethargic and just pull and pout and not do anything real "exciting." This I know for a fact.

I used to fish Lenore a lot. The bulldog fight of the lahontans wasn't something that got me ga-ga. I liked the fight of the kamloops up in BC much more. I like seeing my backing when fighting trout.

Man, have we gone over the Walleyes and Sturgeon in lake washington here. ;)
As for the Walleyes, I will believe it when I see it. Not saying there are not some in there but if there was a healthy population people would be catching alot of them because they are voracious predators. I caught a nice one on power bait before, also caught a 7 pounder on a flossy fly. I bet there are some Sturgeon but I don't think they are going to reproduce there under the current conditions, they live like 100 years or more so I bet there could be a few. Most of the pictures of the cutts from lake washington have that "sea-run" look. Really silver brite fish. I don't know if that means they are actually sea-run or they just grow up and look that way in the lake and its tributaries.

i know the middle fish is a cut but to my eyes it almost looks like a smaller version of a female steelhead.


i am just trying to put pictures to species and i would never have guessed cutthroat on the middle pic.
