It Makes Perfect Sents.....

Post by fishnislife » Tue May 15, 2007 9:11 pm

What is your favorite sent to use?

I really like ProCure Anise flavor as an attractant for trout. For cats I use the garlic or corn sent. As for bass I have tried a couple but with no greater success than without. Anyone else?
To me I will try anything to gain an advantage but some attractants are just to messy and nasty.

What do ya think?

I really like Mikes Lunker Lotion. Whether it be for salmon or trout.

The best sent that I found is krill. They use krill in all the hatcherys. On every fish from crappie to stuergon. They use this flavor/sent on all the food, medicine, nutrients, etc. they feed the hatchery fish. I use it on everything, fresh and salt. Krill is a type of shrimp. They even put it in powerbait (troutkrilla). The kind I use is a grease that comes in a chewing tobacco like container, it is made by pautskie. I dont fish with out it. Dont put it on rooster tails and lures like rooster tails because the grease will gunk up the blade and it wont spinn. It lasts on your bait forever because it is a waterproof grease. It is clear as well so you dont have to worry about it changing the color of your lure, or buying every color to match the hot color. I even take a little bit and rub my weight, swivle, bobber, and just rub it all over my hands. I bought it last summer and it cost me $5 and Ive MABYE used 1/8 of the container, a little goes a long ways

I use alot of different scents but find myself using mostly the Berkly products. I think what makes it hard to try alot of different scents is the way they are packaged. Don't get me wrong I like to get a lot of scent for a little price. But alot of the bottles are to big for the tackle box. Especially if you want to try several scents there just isn't room. What I have done to solve this problem is purchased travel size bottles of hand sanitizer, shampoo, aloe vera, ect.. then refill them with my favorite scents. Now I can take a bunch of different scents with me and they fit perfect in the trays of my tackle box.

Look for the ones with the flip up squeeze type caps. Sometimes to get the right size bottle for the tackle box I will buy two. One for the lid the other for the bottle. I take em home and rinse them out well. Take your time and make sure they are clean. Shampoo is bad for the ecosystem and I am sure that fish won't like smell of it either. Any drug store will sell these travel size containers.

I get pretty good results with Anise Trout Gravy whcih comes in that small black squeeze bottle. I also use Berkley Powerbait Bass Atrractant - big bottle, however I use left over Anise bottles to store in tackle box. Also no worries about having to clean the bottles extra thoroughly to rid them of hand lotion, etc.

Believe it or not - I have found that the Bass Attractant works considerably well for Trout as well. Go figure.

I always use scents when fishing trout or salmon, smelly jelly being my fav. But for bass, I don't bother. I think sound and sight are the triggers for bass, much more so than scent. Particulaly when your hoping for a reaction bite that literally needs to drop right in front of their face.

It makes a huge diffrence using scent. Even if you dont put it on your lures, just rub it all over your hands. I saw a study once and it showed that fish HATED the scent of nicotine, bug spray, and sun tan lotion. I think that everyone uses at least one of those products while fishing if not 2 and some people (like me) use all 3. Just something to keep in consideration

GeryG -

I like others have never seen - not really paid attention - to which brands need to be kept in fridge/cooler - can you fill us in ? I will definitely pay a bit more attention from now on...

As for the previous comment about the smells of nicotine, and other odors - it is a fact - and my wife hates it as I come home smelling like bait - but I always wipe a couple of drops of scent and rub my hands down before baiting up - even with lures. I smoke and have noticed the difference when I don't.
I also keep a rag dedicated to wiping my hands on after applying scent to bait(s) - keeps it off the clothes and in the rag - keep in Ziplock bag when not fishing - keep the smells from permeating the rest of the garage at home.o:)

Scents to keep cool, Pro-cure.
They use ground up fish, worms, and who knows what else. This stuff spoils, if not kept cool.
I didnt know this until recently. I dont think scents like anise/garlic would apply, I never kept my
scents cool. But I just started using Pro-cure last year. Some thing to consider. Maybe after it
cooks in the sun, you can use it for catfish, they like rotten stuff?

Thanks for the update GeryG...

So - just a couple quick questions
How do you compare Pro-Cure to Berkley and others ?
Consistency, action, etc...
Do you think you've done better this year while it than if/when you do not ?
How Pricey is the stuff in comparison - any idea ?

Pro-cure is effective. I used the carpspit, anise plus, and trophy bass with sucess, also the pink anise for marinating corn for kokane. As far as, how it rates, against others, really depends on the type fish your going after.
I dont like oils or liquid scents, they just come off to easy. I made a scent dispenser out of colored surgical tubing last year that worked pretty good. But the gel stuff out today will stick no any thing, exspecially pro-cure gel.
I did a lot of testing the last 2 year after never using scents for 20 years. My catch went up and the fish got bigger.
It makes a difference, but its messy. I had a larger boat, that I sold, because it had carpet, which got messed up with scents, like the colored ones. I have a basic boat now, that way when my friend slings his scent bait all over, & spills stuff, I dont care anymore. I'm not scrubbing carpet any more. I'm not one for cleaning much. I like just hosing stuff down. Price on scents are not that different. Plus the gel scents last a couple years. Some scents dont
work that well on a type of fish your fishing for, but work good on other fish. Take carpspit from pro-cure, it was made for carp, but works good on trout.

gpc,

Thanks for the info. My next trip to the store I am getting some scent. I have met someone who told me he rubbed it on his hands, but now that makes perfect sense to me.

Huh Iv never heard of the sweat thing makes pretty good sence though, then when you add gas and nicotine and bug spray that makes it even worse. So sent is a MUST And once you start using scent its hard to go back not using scent. It almost feels like your "missing " something when you forget your scent
