What year is the motor? When I needed parts for my 73 7.5hp mercury I had most luck finding parts at crowleymarine.com and also Master Marine up in Burlington.

Anyway check here http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercu ... s/40-1-cyl Does not look the same but maybe they will have the parts you need. Good luck I hope you can get it running again. Sometime you can talk with the shop they will always have extra parts and put together what you need.

FYI is this it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercury-4hp-out ... 83&vxp=mtr
Nope and nope.

I'd definitely check the Crowley Marine website. They had everything for my two older Johnson motors, including carb kits. Online ordering was a breeze.

Nothing on this motor on their website, but I'll call them tomorrow.

Wait a minute, please someone clarify.

Is tip end opening of the needle/nozzle suppose to be big (that a toothpick could go through it)???

Post a picture please. The needle's job is to stop the flow of gas into the bowl that is it. There are some that allow gas to flow through it by design, these are the first holes to get plug with garbage and cause issues that why guys run there motors out of gas so no build up happens.

Have you looked here? http://store.oldmercs.com/category_s/2687.htm little over half way down is your year. I checked the 4.5 hp and the seem to have a kit for that carb not sure if the parts would be the same?

Hope something turns up.

Thanks for the link, ill keep it for now while I try to dig some more.
Sorry, in my post you quoted. it should just state nozzle and not both the nozzle&needle plug. That probably mixed everyone up.

I attached a diagram and with a little detail of what I mean and what I am trying to ask.

More pictures, sorry about blurryness.
Hope you can see the nozzle and not mistaken it for the valve shaft.

Yes your correct there should be a hole in the end. This is where the gas mixes with the air. There should be a jet at the other end of it that will only allow so much gas to pass thru the air coming in the carb pulls thru that tube and into your carb.

Yeah I see. Well I just came to the conclusion of getting another carburetor with similar parts and swap them. Ill update you guys on how it turns out. Wish me luck!

Update:

Got the new carburetor and it's really similar to the stock. Only difference is the shafts.
After some adjustments to the shafts, I plug it in.
I tried to start it up and came up again empty handed.

So now there's gas in the float bowl, i can somewhat hear the carburetor sucking in air, I can smell gas on the spark plugs, and I still have spark. Hmm what's left.

While the new carb may look similar, it is almost certainly not designed to provide the correct fuel/air mixture that particular motor requires. Unfortunately, its just not that simple with carbs and outboards - or any small motor for that matter. Even very very small changes in jet sizes, throat diameter, taper, and a dozen other details can add up to the motor not starting. Plus you could also have other issues adding to the problem - like compression, ignition timing, spark strength etc etc.

Im afraid that the carb is your first stumbling block though. Unless you can get the correct carb with the correct jets your never going to have any luck. Spending money on anything else would be a waste until you can get that part right.

^^^^ Very good advice, not to mention with a "mix the oil in the fuel" 2-stroke anytime you have a fuel delivery problem you also have an oil delivery problem. [wink]

Update:

Got 4 strong friends to help me pull the motor. At the 14th continuuous pull it fired up. Stuck it in a garbage can of water. Spit water real good.

But the motor doesn't idle well. Throttle must be open for it to say idle or stay on.
So we turn off and play around with adjusting the screws and man takes too long to start up again. 9th pull.

Im amazed you got it to start! I will be absolutely astounded if you get it to run well :)

By the way, from the way you worded things it sounds like you started the motor with it out of the water. Thats not a good idea at all.

The water pump in outboards is a rubber impeller spinning inside a stainless housing. It depends on water as a lubricant. Running the motor for even a few seconds without water can - and will - melt the rubber impeller.

Thats bad enough by itself. They are a royal pain to change because you have to remove the lower unit and disassemble it. On an old outboard that can be a real challenge.

Thats only the beginning though. The real serious problems begin when bits of rubber get sucked up into the engine and plug up the water passages in the block. You do not want to tackle that problem!

Good luck!

Yeah my wording was sort of off or vague to say but the the time from the motor turned on to when it got into the water was 3 seconds. I'm aware of the things you said, I just got caught in the wrong moment cause honestly I thought it was gonna be garbage day.

So I figured that the flywheel isn't spinning fast enough or long enough for the motor to start. How I figured his was looseneing the flywheel nut. Dangerous and I won't do it no more, but when I did that, the motor started in 2 pulls.

What could be the problem now?

what is the problem? sound like maybe you have it running?
I will say when I was having a similar issue where the motor would run, but seemed to have no power, I went through everything, starting with plugs, carb clean, and ended up having to buy a brain for mine- basically the spark wasn't getting distributed to the plugs evenly, so basically It was running on 1 cylinder, changing this part fixed the issue immediately, and was the most expensive part I had to buy, was about $100.
