What we have here is a.......Down rigger?
Here's one for the collection!
It has a Pflueger Pakron 3178 reel
It has a smaller roller mid pole instead of an eye and then it has a large roller that swivels on the rod tip
It has the marking "Kolstrand" and "'Seattle" on the casing of the large roller
The pole is 60 inches total and has no name markings but it super flexible.
I am guessing this is" how they dun it old skool"
Has anyone ever seen or used one of these? What's it age/value?
hope I did the attachments right....

It's a meat liner! Or at least thats what I've always heard them called. They actually aren't a downrigger, although I imagine you could use it as one. Most guys who use them just use a TON of weight and run their flasher/whateveryoutieontheend behind the weight. It's basically a trolling solution for those who don't have downriggers. They really aren't very popular, in fact the only place I've seen them used on a consistent basis is around the point defiance area down south. Can't imagine it would be very fun to play a fish on one.

I have something similar on my 9 foot toon. Had some spare-broken pieces laying around that made for a great downrigger on small lakes. Of course mine is straight red neck that I would never brand with a name. Or show to the world.

A meat liner? LMAO ! thats awesome! Well thanks for the info, I guess it's a wall hanger, does it have any value?
It might look good on the wall of Skippers or long John Silvers LOL

I've got to agree with RC, its a meat rod. Back in the day we trolled with single strand wire line and 18 to 24 oz of lead, 3-way swivel, rubber snubber and an Abe and Al flasher. Drop it to the deck and crank up a couple of times to set the depth, it caught a lot of fish. My father still has his old bamboo version that is about 8 foot long and has a more compact roller tip.

Yes it's a meat line and that is what it did. Put meat on the table. No sport at all. My Grandfather and I fished at Point Defiance in the sixties with nothing else until his heart wouldn't take cranking up the 5 to 10 pound window weight depending on the tide flow. Used the biggest Abe & Al we could get and a 6inch wood Point Defience plug in white with a red throat. As G- man said drop it to the bottom and give it a couple cranks. Just like today if you weren't on the bottom you weren't fishing. Thank god for down riggers and the fight they let us have. Sure not like it used to be.

meatline, got 2 that I don't use anymore. not much fin reeling in a 5lb blackmouth with 10lbs of lead on the bottom of the thing.

I have one just like it in my garage. Fished it exactly as G-Man stated, with a squid or j-plug behind the Abe-n-Al.

Wow, thanks for the info and the stories! I found this with some other antique poles in this old gentleman's garage that I was hired to clean out. He Passed away last spring.....Man I wonder what kind of big fish stories the old guy could have told about this rod! I was told he was also a cook in the Navy too! We found a lot of military culinary stuff!

On line well used reels like you describe go for $10 to if you can believe it $225.

I've seen some sell for $300. the 2 I have now I'm told would go for about $200. I got both for free. I was given 3 others but gave them away before finding out they were worth a few bucks.
