That is great, I am excited to get all these cool flies. The two I sent are truly fish killers and can't wait to use the others too. It might be giving myself an unfair advantage, because I know how well mine work, but it would be neat to see and track how many fish we catch with these throughout the year. I have 6 flies that are in my fly hall of fame that have caught more than 100 fish, some of them have just a few threads.

I was just remembering something my Dad once said. MyGrandfather was an avid flyfisher and fly tyer and was a charter member if the Inland Empire Fly Fishing club in the 1950's. Both of them are at the great fishing hole in the sky now. My dad was not a tyer, and I asked him about it once. "Dad, how come you don't tie flies?" He said: " Son, I don't want to write the opera, I just want to sing in it!!"

Good Men, Good memories, I hope I can pass some pearls like that on to some of my boys.

nope, we have 96 right now. and 24 in transit. so in theory we have 120:colors:

By the way I didn't clip the barbs on the hooks.It was hard not to it's like second nature to clip them but I will leave that up to ya'll.It's just habit for me to clip them since I fish all barbless.

i always fish barbless too, but for swaps ikeep them on there, let the recipiants decide

Actually, out of habit, I filed down the barbs on the hooks prior to tying them.

Next one I'll try to remember to leave them.

I mash my barbs down with needle nose or vise. However, I think I sent my flies with barbs attached. So here's a question for all who plan a demise for their barbs. Do you clip, file or mash your barbs. I've heard that clipping still leaves a jagged edge. I've actually heard that the Game Warden at Rocky Ford has actually tested some hooks by trying to back a hook out of a sweater. If it left no wool on the hook then it was alright. I've also heard that filing the barb could actually weaken the shank just under the point. Just curious what method we all use and why.

i squash them down, snaps them off in most cases very easly.
works great.

our wardens use your Tshirt or you tippet, and if they snag AT ALL, your screwed.lol

I use the Dremel MultiPro Cordless rotary tool with a small cut-off wheel. It works fantastic.

I have been grinding down the barb on my flies this way for about 15 years now. I have never had a hook break under the point.

This method will leave the hook perfectly smooth. It will pass any wardens test:cyclopsan .......guaranteed!!

That is pretty fancy Marc, I tie for the most part with barbless hooks. When Barbed I pinch them off with needle nose pliers. It does weaken the hook though. I also use English Bait hooks with the bump in them. They are barbless and I have never had trouble hooking or keeping fish on. My swap flies all have barbs. Barbless is so important for catch and release, but so is limiting the length of the fight and minimal handling. Marc do you grind 14's and 16's or smaller?
