Used to be a winter thing.... last few years/decade, I've heard of more people starting earlier.... Sept on into Jan.... I haven't been in years but really enjoyed it when I did. It used to be sorta like a date on the Seattle waterfront..... LOL Fish and Chips, then, jig for squid!

i'll be at les davis pier doing it. got a few out in the boat last year while jigging blackmouth on pt. wilson darts. seen some caught at pt. defiance during mid day too so it just dosen't seem to be a night thing anymore.

I have heard some people getting them in the mornings. Personally that sounds better than 1 am :) I will be squidding les Davis as well.

I used to sein nets full of them this time of year on hood canal. Seabeck and Hoodsport. Of course we were targeting Chum but a squid dinner is hard to pass up.

I remember going out to Myrtle Edwards in snow with ice on the piers. Those were the best nights.

They're in deeper water when it's light out, if it's dark out they'll come in shallow. So if you've got a boat you can go squidding whenever you want.

Had marginal success last year at Seacrest pier in West Seattle, at least Maranation is right there, good food and beer takes the sting out of a cold slow night pretty well! Hoping for better luck this year and thanks for this thread! Was bummed it'll get dark so early for the next few months, had forgotten about squidding!
Good luck this year!

Amazing! I was gonna start a thread on squid tonight and saw this one!!!
I have been workin on my squid buggy for a couple days now and was wondering if anyone had heard if they were catching any.... I have always done well at Des Moines and Redondo piers as long as I could get close to someone with a light over the rail....

This year I have built my own setup so I have my own light system. Calamari.. here I come! [drool]

last year I didn't do very well either, only got a few on one trip but I couldn't get out much, I blew out my knee ... This year I am ready! I think the best thing to do is just go down to the pier before high tide and see if people start rolling in and talk to them. I actually remember catching squid years ago in broad daylight off the Des Moines pier.

Sorry I have not logged in in a few days.... and No I don't have a pic yet, I will take one tommorow and post it, It's a real redneck setup though! LOL I took a spare automotive head lamp with plug and made a hanging harness with about 30 feet of heavy speaker wire and zip tied the wire to the rope... then I have it all stored in a big cooler on a handtruck with one big marine battery and a car battery for power. I figure I have a good couple hours of decent steady light. (I still have to go for the real test) I am gonna look around for a deal on a LED set up. maybe that will extend my battery life.

Squid report.....
I went to the Des Moines Marina today on a scouting mission and got there just before dark.... I stayed til about 8:30 and only got 2 squid but there were a few regulars there that would run back and forth chasin the school around the pier and they did pretty good. I would not say that it is real good right now but they are there! It is just too early yet, maybe in a couple weeks it will pick up. The weather just isn't crappy enough LOL!

I picked up a little over a pound (about 20 squid) last Friday at Edmonds pier. This year is slow and squid are small because of the pink run. Last year the squid were huge and plentiful. Oh well, still fun and the squid are tasty no matter how small they are!

I'll be going back out this Friday hopefully.

I was up at Edmonds myself friday night, got about 13 or 14 squid. Most of them were quite small, but got one that was decent. I gotta be honest though, I think those small squid are actually better eating than the bigger ones, although you gotta get quite a few of them to make a decent meal. Sounds like it is picking up, the guys I have talked to that have been going regularly say they are seeing more squid and bigger sizes every day.

Yeah, they have a better texture. Like butter, yummy.

I caught probably half and half, half little 4 inchers and half 7-8 inchers. Best part was these squid weren't scared of the seals, that's new!

Maybe see you Friday, I've gotta put my walakes sticker on my new battery box.
