Stream side clean up day

Post by chongo469 » Mon Aug 12, 2013 10:43 am

So I was posting this idea on another thread but thought I would put this out there on here.... I think here in about a month or so, we should do a WL get together and walk the river banks and clean up.... We all love this resource and it would be great to give back to what we love, meet new members , and maybe meet new fishing friends.... Bring the kids out and teach them to pick up after themselves and others. No better way to make a difference than getting out there and doing it yourself..... I would give it till past the peak of the pink run and maybe into beginning of October..... Northend people can meet on Sky, Snohomish or even for far northenders can do the Skagit,or even do alternating weeks so Skagit 1 week, 2weeks later do Sky or Snohomish, Stilly, and south end people arrange a meet and clean down that way..... I even thought about posting on other boards and seeing if we can get a big turnout..... Really show the tree huggers that us sportsman really do care about our environment and not all of us just leave crap all over...

Amen!

And don't just wait for a meet up, if you're fishing knee deep in Styrofoam containers, grab a bunch of them and toss em out on your way to the car.

Count me in, and ill bring my 2 year old and my 8 month pregnant wife.

I'm down, I always have a garbage bag and take a couple extra pieces home with me. But I know a few extra people I can bring as a fee for riding in the drift boat.

Well, 30 people have viewed and 3 have said yes..... 10% is a start... Hopefully by late September , early October that number is way higher.... And yes, you don't have to wait till then... Clean up a lil bit every trip out if you can...

Need to organize this to get people to say yes. Need someone on the northend and someone on the southend to take charge and set a date and a place. People cant say yes to something they don't have any info for. Work with Mike and see if he can post something on the homepage. October 5th would be a good day as its at the end of the pink and king craze but yet early enough that the garbage wont be covered in leaves. Also need to pick a place and maybe work with some other angling groups like the PSA.

The idea is great and I think more people would volunteer if they knew more details.

wouldn't hurt to see if we can get some sponsors to help cover some of the cost, many of the big and small tackle shops could promote it like they do derby's..

just my 2 cents....

Great idea's Chuck..... I like the idea of the 5th of October and a meeting place could be discussed in the near future for north and south..... I think PSA, and other local sportsman clubs would be great to get a hold of ... Keep the ideas coming, and we will get a plan in order...

Haha, would be cool if someone who organizes derbies could organize a garbage derby. Would make it more fun for people I suppose, prize for biggest item of garbage, etc.

snoho-wise.. 522 gets hammered, thomas eddy, and all of that lower section off Lowell .. where do we start?
1st week of Oct before the rains start would be good..

If i can get away from duties i'd be in for a few hours of my day..

boating in to some of these places, shore-up and fill a few bags to take back on your boat would be a good plan.. so you're not walking huge bags of crap a half mile to the car. something to consider when planning..

This is great idea and makes way more sense than some of the gibberish that was suggested on the other thread! I have a boat and would haul trash out from the from the water side as well as shore patrol. I live in Gold Bar and fish mostly the Sky, Wallace and the Shohomish. Looking forward to meeting some of you on the river!

I'm in. If we figure out the dates early enough, I could request it off from work to make sure I can be there. Great idea!

I'm in too if the schedule will allow - I'll echo a previous poster that says just pick some crap every time out - at the end of each outing, I recycle the ziplock bag I keep my phone/wallet in and fill it with mono, styrofoam, butts, etc - sad to say I always am able to get full limit on my ziplock catch within a few minutes....(the bycatch has generated a lifetime supply of corkies, floats, lead weights, etc)

October 5th would work for me. I would suggest picking one location or a couple in close proximity to each other where the group could drive from one spot to the next when done. Pinks being the way they are, Thomas Eddy and another spot along the Snohomish system would be a good suggestion.

WL.com will be happy to provide site promotion, gifts, refreshments, and monetary support (such as paying to take the load of trash to a refuse center). We did this years ago at Blue Creek.

In my experience, keeping it simple and "in house" will work much better than looking for sponsors, advertising, etc. A dozen dedicated site members can make a serious dent in garbage at a couple locations. If you want to spread the word to Media better make sure you have a strong commitment first from people.

My only request is that someone take charge of the event and be responsible for organizing it. I am assuming chongo is interested in taking the reigns?

If we can get enough m onetary support, I could probably get a dump truck to haul trash to the dump. I could probably do one load without paying for fuel.

I'll be there. I've done a few clean-upson the Yakima in years past and it's a blast. We've had teams on bank and boat so we could get to as much as possible. Count me in and a few others that I'll bring with me.

So October 5th 2013 it is then..... Planning on meeting at either Cady park in Snohomish or Al Borlin park in Monroe... Just trying to get a good meeting area with room, parking and a good midway point between the Snohomish river and Skykomish. I know its a lot of river to cover so I guess we can just team up for shore people and boat people and discuss areas we are going to cover later as it gets nearer to October 5th.... Figure maybe BBQ and lunch potluck for the afternoon, and if people can stick around, maybe even do some fishing after the clean up..... This could be done on other rivers also if someone would like to take the lead on a south end river or something.... I'm sure there are several rivers that could use the help, but we will tackle them 1 at a time....
