Hey all,
I live in vancouver and have been gradually working my way north and getting to know the rivers and where I can fish without a boat and so far I have found alot of good areas on the southern rivers but I have heard some good things about the skook and it looks like a fun place to fish so I am headed that way Monday 14 Jan.... Does anyone have some reccomendations on where to fish OTHER then the hatchery... I do not like fishing meat holes around hatcheries as I have not had any good experiences with the yahoos fishing there. Any tips would be appreciated, I know that fishing spots are closely gaurded so any little tips I can work with. If anyone wants to join me I am good with that too!! Also, is the skook a rocky bottom type river or would rubber soles work on my wading boots?

Just start up by the hatchery and walk the river/trails down. You'll be surprised how easy it is to get away from the crowds, and I'm sure that is especially true on a monday. You might run into a few people here and there, but it won't be shoulder to shoulder, and you can just skip the spots that are too crowded for your liking. As for your wading boots, if you intend to try and wade across the river at any point (which is certainly possible) I would go with the felt soles. Otherwise, your lug soles should work just fine, just don't get too adventurous with your wading.

most of the crowd is in the first half mile below the dam and the most common thing I see in people that fish it is that they think there is only 1 hatchery, there are 2 one off of the road for salmon which might get some steelhead and one at the base of the dam for steelhead which creates those combat zones like deadline or corner hole but if you work your way from red gate hole downstream to the plunker holes which are pull offs off of skookumchuck road.
As for the bottom, most of it is mud or some type of gravelish bottom.
Standard gear here work but does not hurt to think outside of the box like fishing with night crawlers or powerbait I have heard works and have personally witness how deadly plugs and spoons are in that river.
