Steelhead Reports and Pics 2012-2013

That one came on an Beau Mac SMJ 10, about 5 feet from the bank. Also hooked into 3 others, one of them on an SMJ 12.

If you saw someone in a bright blue rain coat about 100 feet down from the lower boundary sign, that was me. Left around 9:45 with just the one fish.

yeah I probally walked past you then, that sucks I was leaving to go upstream of the launch at about the time of the bite cause I saw a people hooking up conctantling as I was walking up, darn, hopefully they are biting again tommorrow. Good job anyways.

Me and Kockmandoo did a lil fishing for those steelhead things this morning, landed 3, killed 2 and lost 3 more, saw zero other fish between 10 other guys, lol

Went to reiter yesterday. Super slow. I did get a little 5 pounder though... it was a branch.

Nice Cascade fish! I'll be hitting it up there soon if the salt steelhead fishing remains this slow. Going out tomorrow hopefully to get some ocean bright steel.

I was told that there are large numbers of HUGE steelhead being caught in the salt in tribal nets. How big are the ones you have been getting there in the salt? Are there many fishing there where you fish and how are they doing?

They are HUGE! I actually got one today for a little birthday steel! I'll be posting the pic soon. It's been really slow though, you would watch 5 or 6 fish follow up your hootchie and swim away. I only saw 2 other people fishing and one of them hooked up. I learned today that when you get one to follow, you reel as fast as you can and give a dead spot. Hopefully I can get more since this my 2nd saltwater steelhead for this season. Oh and most of the fish are averaging 10 pounds and above. (3 and 4 salts?)

Right on! Happy birthday! Oh and something to try when you see them follow but not commit, start off your retrieve with rod tip pointing to the left and then switch it to the right every couple of cranks of the reel. If that makes sense? what you are trying to do is make it look to the fish like what ever it is chasing(your lure) is trying to get away. You will get hit on the change of direction. When I use to have a salt water fish tank, I had a lion fish that I would feed gold fish to. The gold fish will try and make lots of turns to get away and usually would get swallowed as it made the turns. While the gold fish was swimming straight the lion fish would just follow, when it would turn SWALLOW!

Only one usable/ripe hen for the egg take yesterday. Still no numbers in the hatchery traps. If you plan on making the trip up, you might want to check website for emergency closure before the trip, as it still sounds like that could end up happening.

yeah I plan on doing that, I also see it is really low still, hows the weather up there been, hopefully it can rain.

The rain has not been bringing the water up. What we need is a major warming and the snow melt will bring the river up. The snow level has been just slightly higher then the river, so when it would rain, even dumping rain, smost of the percepitation was snow instead of rain and it still sitting on the ground instead of draining into the river. when it melts the river will rise.

Right on Danny. Way to nail them! Today was a bust for Tim and I. Tons of people and only saw 1 fish and that was brought up from down river.River is down to 300 cfs!!

Thanks Marc! Wow though 300cfs is LOOOWWW. I really thought the river would get up from some snowmelt or something but it looks like the cascade just keeps dropping. Need to see the river RISE in order to tell if anything else is going to come in!

alright thanks, any action in the skagit then? Last year when it was slow the eddies were really good, watched a guy hook 3 in one hour and I lost one too the day before that.

Where did you fish last year in the skagit? Not real familiar with the good hole in the skagit around the cascade.

Yes, that is what I mean. but not really twitching but just changing direction. But twitching it can work too.
Won't see me at the cascade on any weekend. Just too many people.

Yep, little summer run hen on a dropper jig. I've never utilized the dropper on a jig though...
