Re: Steelhead Reports and Pics 2012-2013
Landed number 19 today, went 3 for 5 by 8:00. First one landed was on the 5th or 6th cast. Then about 15 minutes later I landed about an 8 pound buck that was a little bit dark so I released it so I could keep fishing, it had only been light for about 15 minutes. Would have kept that buck if it was not so early. Hooked 2 others and lost them both after a short fight. About 8:00 hooked another buck and landed it and decided to keep that one and take the limit, considering this whole time there was only 1 other fish caught and no other bobber downs. No other action seen out of several people fishing until about 10:00 when a flyfisherman caught one. Left shortly after that.

Nice Cascade fish! I'll be hitting it up there soon if the salt steelhead fishing remains this slow. Going out tomorrow hopefully to get some ocean bright steel.

so cascade fishing is getting a little better, how many people were there?
That guys first steelhead is not that bad, my first was way worst, but I was excited about that is why I kept. What did you get it on, I was at the cow and did not hook anything during the day.

Re: Steelhead Reports and Pics 2012-2013
I would not say it is getting better at all. There where tons of people there today. There where 4 guys fishing accross the river from us and they had been night fishing with no success, not sure how early they got there but they had been fishing for quite a while before we got there...with no luck. Several people below us, a few above...saw several people come walking in and see the number of people and just turned around and left without even fishing! My buddy fished the same spot as I and was using the same jig as I(i tied them both and both the same color) and he left today without a single bobber down. The guy on the otherside of him is who got the other fish, but that was the only bobber down for him. The fishing is still bad at best for the cascade..I say this because of the number of people vs. the number of fish caught.Brat Bonker wrote:so cascade fishing is getting a little better, how many people were there?

I was told that there are large numbers of HUGE steelhead being caught in the salt in tribal nets. How big are the ones you have been getting there in the salt? Are there many fishing there where you fish and how are they doing?beachbum97 wrote:Nice Cascade fish! I'll be hitting it up there soon if the salt steelhead fishing remains this slow. oh because we are going to be up at our cabin all of next week but if fishing still sucks and the hatchery did not get any back and if we do good at the cow saturday then we just might fish somewhere elsegoodtimesfishing wrote:I would not say it is getting better at all. Only one usable/ripe hen for the egg take yesterday. Still no numbers in the hatchery traps. If you plan on making the trip up, you might want to check website for emergency closure before the trip, as it still sounds like that could end up happening.Brat Bonker wrote:oh because we are going to be up at our cabin all of next week but if fishing still sucks and the hatchery did not get any back and if we do good at the cow saturday then we just might fish somewhere elsegoodtimesfishing wrote:I would not say it is getting better at all. Being a hatchery fish ,I would keep it too. It'll do no good in the wild. Better to be rid of it.The hatchery from where it came from is most likely closed or full.
Will hatchery fish go back to sea and freshen up then come back again like Wild fish?

From what I understand they will try the hatchery first then move on to find some. Nature seems to find a way.

Yes, I kept it. It was bleeding badly (tore up one of the gills inside) and I have a hard time releasing a fish that is going to shortly die unless it's absolutely necessary.fear_no_fish wrote:Please tell me you threw that thing in the river or somewhere other than your rig...
Yeah, smoked steelhead and crab/shrimp bait!natetreat wrote:Hey! It was his first ever steelhead! Smoke it up, and now he'll have something to look forward to!

It was pretty rough looking but yeah it was dirty when I took the pic. They were biting and I was in a hurry to get back out and catch some more. There were four fish caught in a 5 minute period right where I was before this one, and I ended up 1 for 4. The last one I hooked was at LEAST as big as this if not larger, but very chrome. Bent the hook on the jig and got away. All within 5-10' of the bank.Bodofish wrote:Doesn't look that bad, just a lot of sand stuck to it. Wash him off and I'd be he looks pretty good.
Was back down there this morning, glowballing till it was light enough to see my float. Missed 2 drifting, and missed 2 takedowns on an SMJ 10 jig later. Helped a guy net a really nice chrome buck, probably pushing 18lbs. Slower day today, not as many fish being hooked, and much fewer being landed than Wednesday morning.
But, i did come home with 4 jigs that weren't mine. Got snagged and found a massive line ball with 2 jigs in it, and 2 more stuck in some roots at the water line when I moved down a ways. All of them looked pretty new, saving me some money!

Trust me, I cant either. Especially after watching the fight next to me this morning. Lasted about 15 minutes, and I think I was shaking as much as he was after netting it for him!racfish wrote:I realize its his first Steelhead but thats what in river terms is a BOOT. Nice big fish but probably not a huge fight. I cant wait till you hook into a silver dollar bright steelie.

That one came on an Beau Mac SMJ 10, about 5 feet from the bank. Also hooked into 3 others, one of them on an SMJ 12.
If you saw someone in a bright blue rain coat about 100 feet down from the lower boundary sign, that was me. Left around 9:45 with just the one fish.

Leaving with one fish is awesome. No shame in that. I'll most likely fish the Snoqualmie one day, Nisqually the next and the Green. Ive heard a couple good things happening on the Green. I'll be in my gold Homda accord. If not I'll be in my red Toy PU. Stop by say hello. I'll have my holiday cheer with me. Good luck to everyone. Except the Freak who dosent need any more luck and needs to share his luck.LOL.

We used to call that the Elvis Pressley shake. As soon as my pole bounces in the pole holder my leg goes a twitching. I love that feel.gonnahookit wrote:Trust me, I cant either.
