Nice Buck Nate! The second photo doesn't look native to these parts
Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
Nope we were cutthroat fishing in a beaver pond out by hoodsport. Mr. Zig loves fishing, he loves to pick at the fish we catch. And if you here a voice that sounds not quite human say "Shuut uuuuuup!" or "Mr. ziggypaaaants, Rawk!" or beat boxing, That's us.
Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
haha that'll keep you entertained nate, sweet pic too ,rawk on!

Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
Haha oh now i get it. a King thats the same color as the coffee i drank this morning isnt quite the same as a coho with a tint of color. theres a cut-off point. if i posted a super dark fish that i kept i would expect some jokes. thats just the way it is.
Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
I don't know, a salmon is a salmon. Dark is dark. If it's not good, then why keep any salmon that is dark?

Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
Because a salmon, such as a king with a little bronze or a coho with a tint of red, as long as the fish is still shiny and healthy tastes the EXACT same and the meat color is identical to a chrome bright fish from the salt. If you have fished and kept fish both dark and bright like me, then you begin to learn what color of each species is where the cut-off point is, where the meat starts to fade from red to white. I can tell when a salmon is going to have red or pale meat. That coho i kept, had bright red meat. SO the question now is. WHY NOT keep it if it tastes the same.
See these two fish below. Theire meat was identical and taste the same, even tho one is a little colored, it still is fresh enough to be the same. I guess you just gotta learn these things through experience...

Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
Well, neither of those 2 fish are dark. One merely has a LITTLE tint to it. I've also heard even the very red fish can be smoked and are just fine. So I see no problem.

Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
Ok, well the coho in the picture you commented on had just a LITTLE tint also. I dont keep super dark fish. They taste OK. trust me, they are nothing like eating a fresh fish with red meat. They are simply edible, but seem to lose their flavor, they get bland. Its not like they taste horrible or anything, just not as good. When you catch as many bright fish as me, the taste of a dark fish is just not worth going thru all the smoking preparation. For some, all they get is dark fish, and thats what salmon taste like to them. Thats fine, but if you keep a super dark fish theres no reason why a few jokes cant be made, especially when they blend in with the dirt theyre laying on.
Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
I can understand the 'just not as good' comment/opinion. I've cooked trout from the same lake and some were great, some were ok, and last year one was just plain terrible, I threw that one away. All were cooked exactly the same as that is the only way I know to cook fish. Most were from the same time of year - summer - the fish are too soft, spring - they are very firm, fall - some are ok, some aren't. All shallow fish while bass fishing. So I don't bother keeping a trout anymore unless it's very early spring. The warmer water isn't nice to the fish. But then I wouldn't even worry about what others do with their fish.

Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
Agreed. I fish in the Potholes for rainbows in early spring, and the fish taste great. One year, we decided to go in mid-late summer when the water was SUPER warm. WOW the fish tasted like you were picking up a chunk of algae and eating it. Trout defiently lose their good flavor in warm water. Same goes for salmon, the longer in fresh, the less taste they have,
Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
Ya, I've heard that too about salmon. The first red salmon I caught I let go as I didn't know if they were any good to eat, I was trout fishing in the Ceder. Asked my neighbor and he said smoked they are fine. This was back about 1974. Haven't even fished for salmon since, except for one day on the ocean, didn't catch anything. Bass are all that count to me. But I need to go wally and musky fishing some day.

Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
Now in FF defence the fish he said was dark was nasty moldy even. It wasnt dark it was a black blackmouth. However I know that weve seen pics of some fish I wouldnt bring home and he called them chromers. Sometimes peoples tastes in fish are different. I like to bring home bright pinks and if I bbq them day I caught them cool otherwise I smoke em. Even if its the next day.
Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
S'all bout the chrome! a tint of red or a wee bit more is ok too, even those pinks smoked up good, a few weeks out of the salt.. I smoke up 95% of the fish i catch and give 95% of that away to friends and family that don't fish and would never know.. all they ever say is "yummy!"
-that "other" forum site is full of Elite gang up on people fishers, glad to come over to this forum.. sometimes I take pics of my catch (sometimes darker than preferred) and then let it go.. so you won't always see a fish in my hands that has come home. Though, You can count on it being hooked legally with legal tactics, ALWAYS.. even the red rockets.. still fun to catch.
If it's Chrome it came HOME
Late September Chrome from as few weeks back on the lower Snoho

nice fish and I commend you on your tactics oneshot, I love hearing the words "those fish wont bite anything" I take it as a challenge and usually especially lately ive seen some suprised or even dumbfounded looks when i catch them gulping down eggs,
On the topic of dark fish, im out of college looking for work, I commercial fish and have lots of top quality fish in my dads freezers but theres something about bringing home a fish and cooking it up and its a cheap meal for a group of people, yes the meat is always not blood red but I just put it on the BBQ and add a little more flavor and its superb to me, superb to my gf, and my friends are almost always greatful. just my .02

Re: RIVER Fish Pictures !
"if its chrome it came home" Haha thats a classic!!! Hitting the skagit tomorrow in my drift boat, ill try to get some pics from my buddies phone, we will see what happens, hopefully water color and height isnt too bad from the recent rain. Ill just have to hit the S fork if necessary.
Oh and flinginpooh. I probably shouldnt say this but some of those dark kings i said i took home... welll..... i said that because ur not suppose to hold fish out of the water if your gonna release them. So i said i kept those dark hogs when they mayyy have just slipped back in the water on accident. I rarely keep non-chromers. Lol
P.S. SINCE were on the topic of CHROME... heres a chromer for you boys
