Silver Lake (Cowlitz County) huge crappie!
Just in case you guys didn't see it in the Q & A thread under Freshwater.
It's good to see a fish like this after seeing so many very small and very skinny fish.
This 17" beaut was caught at Streeter's. I'll be checking the lake over the weekend so I'm hoping to see others with really nice fish.

about an inch bigger than my Long Lake crappie
A nice bass is too valuable a resource to enjoy catching only once.

This not the average size crappie for this lake. I've only heard of one other large fish coming out. The rest are extremely small and under the legal size of 9".
There is a lot of harvesting of under size fish going on. If you see this PLEASE report it by calling 911 and indicating you have a fishing violation in progress. They can contact one of our Officers or if none are available they can send a Trooper or County.

Dear Stacie,
At what point does a healthy population of crappie that are under 9 inches considered stunted?

That is something I'm concerned about here. It's a prey heavy lake. I'll be taking scale samples and do age analysis to try and determine what is going on. I've seen tons and the average size is 7". And everything I am hearing from anglers is that they are small. This makes two years in a row.

You can almost always bet that the Crappie you pull in are 7in. and the perch are 4in and the bass are...
That's right there are none

The average size perch I have seen are a lot bigger than 4". They ate the only fish that I'm not worried about right now. But the crappie and bass, yep.

Hopefully it's just a cycle thing, but thinking about how those crappie sit in Streeters all the time, competing for the same food these fish will get more stunted with the 9" rule in that lake. I know the first time I went there a couple years ago they were averaging about 9" or so, last year in the fall we caught a bunch in the 8" group, only time will tell I guess in 3 or so years if the rule works.

The rule was put in place to create a quality fishery. The bigger picture is the water quality and lack of cover. Both of those are being closely worked on.

RE:Silver Lake (Cowlitz County) huge crappie!
I agree. The carp should have never been stocked. Crappie relate to a weedline big time in most lakes. Silver only has lilly pads.Stacie Kelsey wrote:The rule was put in place to create a quality fishery. The bigger picture is the water quality and lack of cover.
