I can only find really heavy Quantams. I like their reels i just can't find a good one that doesn't weigh too much. I got a spinning reel I've been using for like 4 years and it's great.

They just weigh a lot. Granted the place I was shopping for only had a 2 spinning reels of them, and they were just bricks. Too heavy to comfortably hold for a while...

I agree Quantum does make some pretty respectable reels for the buck. I had several that were mid-range priced and they worked very well for me. As a matter of fact, I still have two on a couple older rods that I use as loaners when fishing with my sons.

I have yet to spend alot of money on spinning reels. Pflueger Trion is only about $50 and is all the reel I could hope for in a spinning reel.

I'm a huge Ugly Stick fan. They are relatively cheap and can take a beating. My Pflueger President spinning reel was a tad expensive for me at $70, but it was a gift and has been an amazing reel. Microchipped rods/reels and rods over a hundred bucks baffle me. One of the great things about this pastime is that you don't need an $80k boat and thousands of dollars in gear and equipment to have fun and be sucessful. Keep it simple, keep it cheap, and most all- have fun doing it!

Yes sir! As a matter of fact, they're both in Woodland.

Ugly Sticks are good beat up rods, and they do especially good for people who have been known to break rods. I buy them for bottomfishing, cause they don't break, but other then that they are just too heavy to be holding and casting all day. No action on them either.

Totally agree with the ugly sticks and other fiberglass rods, they're pretty much indestructible, but they weigh too much. I usually stick to the graphites, lighter and more sensitive. I have one fiberglass rod that I use to use for crankbaits, my arm feels pretty fatigue after a day of casting and ripping with it.

Ugly Sticks too heavy? Maybe for Salmon or Steelhead, but my 6.5' medium is perfect and has decent action in the tip. I usually fish for 6-8 hours and don't even feel close to fatigued. I just don't have any confidence in products that feel micky mouse, which is nearly all of the ultra-light rods and reels feel to me. Just my .02.

Ugly sticks are bricks. Pick up a good graphite rod and you'll notice the difference.

I've felt the graphite and fiberglass; sure they're lighter than an ugly stick but the weight just doesn't bother me that much.

If the weight doesn't bother you, then they are good rods. Nothing wrong with em in that case. I think they do lose a little sensitivity, but as known, you can't break em

Ugly Sticks are too heavy? I have two 7' Uglies and they don't seem heavy compaired to my other rods at all. One is a ultra light action 2-6 lb test the other is a medium action 6-15 lb test. Both have great action, it really just depends on the fish/water you will be using them in. Sounds to me like you need to hit the gym if a fishing rod is to much to hold up all day. Just kidding Sam. LOL. I just really like the two that I have and plan on buying more when the time comes, but that is just my preference.

They do make UglyStik Lites now. They are graphite now I believe, which would make them much lighter. I got one 6'6" rod and it's decent, but for $40 they aren't bad at all...

I think the 7' 2-6 lb rod that I have is a Lite and I love it. I never really pay attention to what the rod is made of I just pick it up and if it feels good to me I buy it. You could go through my countless rods that I have and pick one out and I could only make a wild guess as to what it is made of. I don't really care as long as it has a good action and is not a Lamiglass or Loomis. LOL.

Yea I don't care what my rod is made of or who makes it (again, no Loomis, Okuma). If it feels right and the price is right, then it's worth buying it.

It is funny that you mention Okuma rods. I absolutely hate them, but my brother loves them. My brother is a better fisherman than me on most species and could probably become a salmon/steelhead guide in the rivers if he could get his finances squared away. He really likes the action on Okuma rods, but I find it hard to like the action of a broken rod. If you buy an Okuma, that is what you will end up with not to long after your purchase, a broken rod. But I am sure if you fish with a Loomis, you should be used to a nice actioned broken rod. LOL.

Wow, what a great thread, and it really shows the difference from "another" forum that I am a member of... I think most of them there think you should not even be allowed to post unless you spend a fortune on your gear...
Its true you don't need to spend an arm an a leg for a rod. I also agree you can't feel much with an Ugly stick, and Okuma rods and reels are pretty close to garbage overall. Even though I own three of them, because my dad works at a place that sells tackle and buys me one every year (thanks?) You need to bring a screw driver along with the reels or you will break the plastic when the screw comes loose. The rods are not any better. The best rod I ever got was for a gift certificate I got for some squawfish drawing. It says "Graphite pro composite" I don't even know who makes it, but I have caught everthing from Sturgeon to salmon and it has not broken even though it is a pretty light rod and I can feel everything. There are some decent fiberglass rods out there as well, fenwicks have become less expensive and they are a decent option...

I have an ugly stick and rarely use it. It's on one of my loaner rigs. I'm not sure if ugly meant looks or feel, it always felt out of balance for me.
