How to make heavy salt sinking type baits last longer

Post by Fish-N-Fool » Tue Dec 21, 2010 2:51 am

I'd like to share with you guys some tricks that I have learned on how to make heavy salt baits like mine last longer that are prone to tear easily. I use a 2/0 to 4/0 Gammy EWG hook and a short piece of 3/8" surgical tubing colored to match the bait. I slide the tubing around the head of the bait where the hook goes through the center of the bait like normal and comes out through the tubing like this. I just wet the bait and tubing in my mouth and push the tubing over the bait till you have about 3/8" sticking out.

This holds the hook much more stable and causes less tearing in both the head of the bait and the body of the bait where the hook point goes through without hurting the action or making a hard spot in the bait that would feel unnatural to the fish. Plus the bait will not fling off the hook as sometimes happens when a fish goes crazy and shakes its head a lot. The tubing keep the bait on the line very well. It doesn’t hurt the hookup percentages either, as the hook point is tex-posed like most everyone rigs it. The baits will still tear up back where the hook point goes through, but it improves bait life by at least 50%. I do this same idea with my wacky rig baits also, Read the thread "A Better way to Wacky rig" in this forum.

I use 3/8 I.D. 1/2 O.D. colored surgical tubing. You can find a color of tubing to closely match almost any bait.
The best place I have found to get it is off the web. That site sells 5 ft of colored tubing for $6.50 with some odd lengths even cheaper. They have about 15 colors.
I'm not sure if I can post a link to the site or not here, so until I find out if you want the URL just shoot me a PM
If I can post it I will soon.

Edit; I was told it is ok to post links so here it is ,

Yes you can post a link to the store/web site. Sounds like a good idea.

F-n-fool ,
Great tip bro , Iv used something simular to surgical tubing is the past with senko's . I stoped using the tubing because i noticed that it started missing a few fish here and there .
I quickly determined that since my hook didnt rip through my worm anymore was because it was being blocked by the tubing , so that plastic would just load up right in the middle of my EWG hooks and therefore my hook failed to penetrate the ruth of there mouth .
Now as i mentioned iv only used this on a senko for the sake of saving some coin on gary's expensive products ..lol I am curious however in using this for tubes . Can you talk a little about some of your experiences with hook ups , cons , pros, etc ..Do you use different size hooks based on the tube size or the amount of surgicial that you apply ...thanks for the insight in advance bro :salut:

Hey Dez,
I'm not quite sure you understood my post. I do not and have never tried to use the surgical tubing on tube baits.
I only use it on solid body soft baits like my Sink-N-Fool bait. It is a bait you fish just like a sinko, but they have a differant shape that makes them have more action as they fall. The two baits are very close in fall rate and how they tear up so easy. So what I learn with my baits you can apply to the sinko as well. The lure in the pixs above is one of my 6" Sink-N-Fool baits. I have had no problem with hook ups using this method as the back half of the hook is rigged as normal and with the soft tubing the fish doesn't feel any hard spots in the bait so they hold on to it just as long as they do then it is fished without the tubing.
You will be hearing alot more about my baits in the future as Mike and I are working out the details on a Sponcer/Fishing Contest set to go off next spring here at WL.com
