Frustrated with big bass just following

Post by Eoso » Fri Sep 17, 2010 11:21 am

For the most part I just want to vent about largie pigs not committing to swimbaits. Stuck to shore/dock fishing, I've been throwing hard swimbaits out deeper and retrieving them with huge bass following in groups. I've tried varying the retrieves, colors, and lures, but always end up leaving frustrated with myself.

What's a good follow up lure for swimbaits when they have a follower for a good 60ft or so?

i would throw a jig, big t-rigged worm, hell even a soft jerkbait
senkos may work too
sometimes followers can be hard to catch

Or rip a rattletrap, or jerkbait. Put some Smelly Jelly on your lure.

Is that roughly a weedless wacky rigged worm?

yea but with a weighted head.
but i would throw a dropshot too depending on cover with 6-12lb line
and rig up a 6-7inch worm or a 5in senko

About a 1/16th to 3/8 oz jighead. Depending on depth and how fast you want the worm to get down there. And activity level of the fish.

I always have a Texas rigged senko at the ready, it won't get down as quick as a quick shake (which I do like) but I can work it more like a jerk bait and then let it flutter down.

Wrong angle. Your coming up the bank from deep to shallow and their just checking it out wondering whats going on. Probably not the way those bigger girls are accustomed to eating from their ambush spot. And you might be throwing it in their backyard where their just hanging out. Find the kitchen table (ambush point, feeding zone) near by and the right angle and you'll be all over them. If you had a boat knowing where this pack is, I would head out from your spot and find something that they might hold tight to ie - cover. You'd need a depth finder if nothing on the lake is very apparent. Then start buy throwing the bait at different angles and depths. Once you pinpoint the way they pluck off prey, you'll know it. And most of the time you can wash, rinse and repeat the cycle that you find.
But for now since you shorebound, I would either size down or switch up to a jig and slow it down. Also, try a different set of weather conditions and time to try for them.
Good luck, look forward to the pics once you stick'em.

Thank you for the insight, I'll definitely take that into consideration. For now I'm waiting on straps for my pontoon to at least get mobile, but I've been going crazy and impatient. Haha I'll definitely post pics if I actually stick one worth mentioning. Thanks again.

Fishnislife,

You know you're my boy, but I have to respectfully strongly disagree with a couple statements in your post. I just want to make sure that this angler gets a second opinion and extremely confused. First, presenting a bait uphill (deep to shallow) is often the best way to present a swimbait to big bass. This is absolutely the ideal presentation angle the majority of the time for reasons I will explain later. Secondly, I would not suggest that just because he is shorebound that he has to downsize or slow down to be successful. Perhaps this is will be required on some occasions but big bass can definitely be caught on big swimbaits from shore.

Unfortunately, I have to head out of town right now for the weekend but will offer a full reply to this post when I return. There is a lot to type and I don't have time at the moment.

I'll add that the largest swimbait I throw barely clears 6". I'm planning on experimenting again in the morning so here's hoping something clicks.

The 6.4 pound largie I caught Aug. 29, '09 was from deep to shallow with a deep diving crankbait, it does work. The 'trough' I was fishing has been quite productive over the years. The big one that broke off in Aug. this year was from shallow to deep - different spot, that I'll also fish deep to shallow often. That spot it mostly depends on which direction I'm fishing that bank, but I'll also turn around and fish the spot oposite before I leave the spot and area. I've caught many fish just by turning around and casting over the stern of the boat behind me where I've alreay fished, not always over the bow or side of the boat.

Deep to shallow - I'll fish certain spots that way more often then other spots, but it'll work in most all, if not ALL, spots.

Drop offs into deep water are a great spot to fish that way as the fish can see the crank coming in like it's a fish from a school that is coming in to feed.

Same idea as to bouncing/dragging a jig from shallow to deep, then changing boat position and dragging/bouncing the jig from deep to shallow, in the exact same spot over a matter of say 15 minutes or even less time, or more time say 1/2 hour, no REAL time, just when you feel like moving. Fish 15 minutes deep to shallow, then move the boat and fish that spot/area from shallow to deep.

It all depends on which way the bass are facing at any given time, and how they respond to how a bait is coming from that piticular direction. Some fish won't chase down a lure that comes up from behind, some will NAIL IT!. Ya just have to keep on fishing and hope a big one bites.
Tom.

The five phases of a fisherman:
1) I want to catch one.
2) I want to catch a limit.
3) I want to catch a really big one.
4) I want to catch them the way I want to catch them.
5) I want to help others catch them.

Was too crowded today to give it an honest try. On a positive note, my pontoon straps came in so I'll be able to work different angles.
