Angling vs. Hunting

Gents,

I know a lot of us both hunt and fish. How many of you stow your rods away in the garage and break out your bows, muzzle loaders, rifles and shotguns during the fall?

If so, are you successful? I bang away at grouse with a shotgun, harvesting a few here and there, and hunt deer in northeast Washington. I managed a decent whitetail buck last year after unsuccessful seasons in 2004 and 2005.

How are you guys making out? Would you rather continue fishing or is your hunting success enough to fill the void?

When fall comes I usually hunt pheasants and quail down south around Medford (family) and hunt grouse in the Coast Range near Tillamook, but that's about all the hunting I do anymore and it's plenty.

I still bass fish through October. Nov and Dec are family holidays and get-togethers. Jan-midMarch I prepare for the upcoming season and dream about bigger bass and work my dogs. Mid-March, I start bass fishing again.

Fishing for me typically ending in Sept. This year might be different as I have a 5 year old that begs to go fishing several times a week. He thinks he is ready for hunting, but he's not. I an effort to spend time with him I might fish longer this fall.

I normally hunt Mule deer on the brakes on the Grande Ronde River and have filled my tag earily on the last few years. Last year I shot a 4x4 with a 31 inch spread and was done by noon on opening day to head down to the river and try my hand a steelhead.

I also try to muzzleload for Elk in Pend Orellie but have never had sucess. Nov I shoot at ducks, key work is shoot I normally only muster 10-15 ducks a year. I also get a couple of grouse in Sept, and a few for camp meat if nothing else is happening. I love fishing but it simpley fills the void of hunting season.

UNLESS THESE LAKE START FREEZING OVER , I DONT EVER SEE A REASON TO STOP FISHING.. The only thing that will keep me in the house are "HIGH WINDS" .. Fish hard or buy golf clubs ..lol ..BBD :king:

This is my worst time of year with hunting season starting and fishing still going plus my boys in football and above all things working 2 jobs AAAAUUUUUUGGG.
Seriously My Boys come first, and try for early steelhead from mid sept to when elk season starts here in Idaho on the 9th of Oct. (rifle) then elk will be the target, unless there's a good deer in the sites. Nov. will be Deer for sure. then Family time in Dec. January I'll be on the ice looking for panfish!!!!! If at all I get both early I head back to Lewiston for more steelhead!!!!! antsy antsy antsy :bounce:

Whatever you do, don't miss out on your boys football. My boy was a three year starter and since he graduated these last two years of Friday nights are awful quiet .

I usually go Mule deer hunting with my friend when it opens up, but I guess I really can't call that hunting because most of our time is spent at camp with a few other hunting buddies b.s.ing and drinking. I cannot hike for deer anymore because my knees are to bad to do so. But during the late fall/early winter I focus my attention on ducks and steelhead. I probably go more for ducks because I have the chance to fish for steelhead again during the summer. Duck hunting is probably my most favorite thing other than fishing and I spend my weekends during the winter duck hunting and week days steelheading. We hunt mostly on the lower Snoho or in the bay, but we also travel to other places like the basin to hunt ducks.

I go by Archersteve on Archerytalk, and yes, I hunt.

But, must I do only one? Hunting camp usually has a few fishing rods stuck in the corner for the "rest days". If I get that buck soon enough, than that just leaves more time to fish. If I don't get the buck soon enough, than there will still be fishing throughout the fall and winter.

no worrys cavdad45 my boys are my #1 pryority. I wouldn't miss watching them for the world. Even if I absolutly have to sit with my ex-wife

After fishin' Lake Sammamish in the late summer for Kings, I gear up for deer season. This year I helped my friend's son get a huge Blacktail Buck over 7 years old. It may be a youth record for archery and is estimated to score around 108. I got a bear with my bow. Then I got tow whitetail bucks in the rut last week - a 4x4 and a 3x4. I called all three bucks in by rattling and grunting. It's been an awesome year for big game but so so for fishing. My neighbor reeled in a 20# Mac on our boat but I couldn't get any 20+# Kings into the boat. They broke off three times.
