I own a small one man remodeling business and things have slowed up considerably. New housing starts are way down and Home Depot and Lowes look pretty empty. I might be in the right construction field though. Since people can't sell their houses, many are doing remodeling. In the last couple of weeks, things have picked up some. Once they get the banking situation squared away and they start lending money again, things should start picking up more. The days of easy money from your home equity are gone.
If you are willing to move and put up with tornadoes, Fargo, ND has a very low unemployment rate. I imagine that Bismark is the same way. In Fargo, they are building blades for the large wind generators. That business is booming. The wind always blows in the Dakotas:cheers:

Absolutely. The green-energy sector is growing jobs at an alarming rate. It's one great field to get into if your motivated and ready for a change. The wind seems to always blow here too in Spokane...but definately not like the Dakotas

Congrats fishaholictaz on the job, I am on the net daily looking for a new job. Also toying with the idea of starting my own consulting company, the only problem is here in Spokane the market is so full of techs that it makes very hard to stand out in the crowd. On that note if any of you need any tech question answered I have placed a link on my post to a site that I can get chat and remote support to people.

Amen brother! The market for programmers here in Puget Sound is completely saturated. I've had a couple of offers for contract positions, but I'd have to take a 40% pay cut. I'm not that desperate... (yet).

I am looking into becoming a service mechanic for those wind generators the pay is great and you can locate in 1 area I think 1 man oversees 4or5 generators.

My family has had a business for near 80 years in Seattle.I have worked now for 2 months w/o pay.I'm hoping things get better.I'm having a garage sale hoping to make a few bucks. My boat is up for sale in Everett. My car sits in the carport not used needing a new tranny. Its the worst I've seen business wise in my life.Im in the contract window treatment bus.Until consumer confidence grows stronger I'm affraid The business wont last through the end of the year.I havent been in here much lately cuz I just dont have time to get outdoors.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

I DONT WANNA BELLYACHE BUT WA NEEDS TO HIRE SOME SUPPORT IT DOESNT SEEM TO ME LIKE A VERY GOOD EXCUSE "WERE TO BUSY" COME ON !!!THIS THE FIRST TIME IVE EVER BEEN UNEMPLOYED AND ITS SOBERING. IAM 39 CARPENTRY IS ALL IVE EVER DONE MAYBE I NEED TO REINVENT MYSELF I WORKED MY BUTT OFF TO GET WHERE IAM AT. I DONT LIKE BEING UNEMPLOYED ITS VERY SCARY TO ME. I WORKED MY WAY OUT OF A JOB. YOU DO THE RIGHT THING, BE RESPONSABLE ,PAY YOUR BILLS TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT YOU DO,TAKE CARE OF YOUR FAMILY THEN THIS HAPPENS. ITS HARD TO ACCEPT BUT I GOTTA STAY POSITIVE AND KEEP MOVING . I DONT WANNA UNDER SELL MYSELF BUT MAYBE I HAVE TO SWALLOW MY PRIDE IN ORDER TO MAKE A LIVING. THE JOB MARKET IS FLOODED WHY HIRE THE EXPENSIVE WHEN YOU CAN GO CHEAP AND GET 2 FOR THE PRICE OF ONE . CRAFTS MENSHIP IS A THING OF THE PAST. ITS A SAD THING I HATE IT BUT ITS BECOMING A REALITY SOBERING NEVER THOUGHT ID SEE IT. STAY POSITIVE EVERYONE ! JUST WHEN YOU THINK YOU GOT IT BAD SOMEONE HAS IT ALOT WORSE AT LEAST I CAN PAY MY MORTGAGE AND CHILD SUPPORT AND THATS IMPORTANT TO ME.
