Since there is another mackinaw tournament scheduled, does that mean that the gillnetting has ended?

It's a lot of fun, Sickbayer. There are various door prizes, sponsors. Most of the prizes past few years were cash for different placement standing. 1st. 2nd.. 3-5th etc.
2 years ago, my 1st year, my buddy and I were rookies. Buddy boated 8lb mack, tied I think 4th place, took home $250.00. I know you've been there, so you know it's beautiful scenery, and not that complicated.
Grab Bodo, and get on it!

The sponsors of the Mackinaw tournament are the same people who are killing the Mackinaw via gill nets. Sounds like a conflict of interest.

No, not exactly...
Having a Mack tourney is helping pull Mack's out of the lake.
It's not like a catch/release bass tourney.

Not a conflict, they and WDFW want the macks gone in Cle Elum. They aren't hiding that agenda.

Most of the people I know that fish Cle Elum are unaware of the gill netting e.g. see third comment so it is important that people are aware of what is going on in their lakes. Also, they are unaware of any public meetings held specifically about killing the Mackinaw before it was commenced.

Unfortunately, I think that ship has left the dock.

I'm kinda torn about it myself. It's fun to have a unique fish species to target and lakers fit that bill, plus they can get big. Not much of a fight though. That said, a yearly sockeye fishery on Cle Elum would be very cool and take some pressure off Baker.

I do enjoy fishing for the macks but they are indeed a lousy fighting fish. I would love to see cle elum become a sockeye lake or even a good koke lake.

All good comments. Just want to put in a plug for lake trout R/T fight. Cle Elum doesn't have mysis shrimp like Chelan so the majority of fish are 60-120' on the bottom even in the summer and average about 31" (10 lbs). I have only had one small fish about 6 lbs. that suffered barotrauma on Cle Elum out of the hundreds released. When jigging with 4/15 braid and a 1/2 jig on top of the underwater pinnacles with a 6 1/2' light action rod, the fish put up a good fight with powerful runs.

I'm fishing way too deep then. I'll have to try shallower.

namaycush, do not know where you got your information on the Mackinaw tournament, BUT, Kenny is not involved with any gill netting that I know of, he and a group of friends started this out as a fun get together, donating a portion of the entry money to the local football team, this year its going to school band, and it kind of snowballed into what it is today, still a real fun get together but with a lot more people involved and some very nice prizes and a good payoff..............

Sorry for the confusion. I stated above that the sponsor of the tournament is gill netting the lake trout. The sponsor of the tournament is the Yakama Nation. It is printed on the tournament flyer and here is their link R/T sponsoring the tournament.
