Serf perch, or rock bass

First thanks everyone I have gotten so much useful tips. My 15 year old son, my brother, and myself are going to drop off crab pots on the docks at Westport, then spend the day bonding (lol). Are plan is to hit the south jetty.

Any suggestions appreciated,

Is it safe enough for a 15 year old?

Will a 9 foot med. ugly stick work?

Are curly tail grubs our best best?

Can I bring a bucket to hall the fish out or should I uses a stringer?

Any tips I would appreciate it, we are getting there late won't be there til 11am.

The Jetty can be extremely fun and at times a real pain. First of all bring plenty of extra gear for the jetty is a real snag fest. The ugly stick will work fine for the jetty, and for rockfish Curly tail grubs will work great. For catching kelp greening and surf perch, sand shrimp works good. However be sure to use some magic thread to secure the soft bodied sand shrimp to the hook. Kelp greening will be right next to the rocks on the river side while surf perch will be on the surf side away from the rocks. As for your son he should be able to navigate the rocks. Be careful when the rocks are wet as they become very slippery. As for the bucket, i prefer a stringer and a backpack for my gear. Watch the tides and the swells, bring gloves for the barnacle covered rocks, and if the fish aren't biting keep moving! Hope this helps and good luck!
