What kind of reel are you looking at? Baitcaster or spinning?

You can't go wrong with Shimano for reels, they are even making great rods now. Shimano's mid priced spinning reels are great. They have three models under $60 so you'll have some options....

Plueger reels are also great, I have some concerns about the strength of their drags...

For rods: Shimano rods are great. Avoid Okuma rods. They break too easily. If your looking for durability, you can pick up an Ugly Stik for $39.99 and that thing will never break.
I like Daiwa rods as well....

If you can get to a Joes they have North x Northwest rods, I picked up a 6'6" Medium action rod for $59.99. Great rod, paired it with a Shimano Sahara 2500....

It's in the product review section a few posts down (maybe a few pages now)

Hey buddy,

Not to ruin your plans, but I noticed that reel is a "surf fishing" reel for saltwater, which means it's going to be a pretty darn large reel, even if you go for the lightest model. I'm just thinking it might be a little excessive in size for freshwater bass fishing. Here is what I use for bass fishing. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ ... mage=0This Shimano Sahara is the right price, and is very smooth and durable. It is also corrosion resistant, which means, if it gets wet, it's not going to deteriorate. That would be my suggestion for you. Like I said, I think the reel you are looking at is too excessive and large, based on it being a salt water reel.

I have a 7' Lamiglas CS701 Competitor spinning rod and Shimano Symetre 750i I'd be willing to part with for $120. Rod is less than 4 months old, reel is a bit older than that, in pretty good shape. Been maintained, properly lubed with reel grease and oil. Minus a couple scuffs and scratches, works just fine. Nothing wrong with either of them, I'm fly fishing now and don't have the need for them anymore. The plastic is still on the cork rod handle. Drop me a PM if you're interested.

That rod is probably well over $100 new and the reel is like $80 new...Would be a great deal for something with minimal usage....Your getting a near $200 package for $120....That's a good deal....
