New salmon trolling rod

Post by riverhunter » Wed Oct 26, 2016 1:39 pm

I'm looking into getting a new salmon rod that will be used mostly on the sound. What I am really looking for is something that has good backbone and can handle heavy downrigger balls but still have a sensitive soft tip to get the most enjoyment from these salmon. I currently have two downrigger rods but I feel like the tip isn't sensitive enough for what I want to use it for. Any tips would be gladly appreciated thanks in advance!!

Price not much of an issue but if I could find a good deal for a great rod that would be even better. If I was to throw price I would have to say from $100-200 but not limited to that and cheaper wouldn't hurt either lol

Went to a lamiglas 1064gh and I love it. A shimano Claris was my last rod and still use it as a back up

I have two that I like to use on the Sound and will handle most any salmon you'll encounter. For silvers and blackmouth I use the Uglystik 9' BWD in light action. The model number is now USBWDR0620C902 and can be had for under $60. It's about as bullet proof as they come and will also serve you well targeting pinks, sockeye and large trout. For kings and ocean silvers I use a Lamiglass Classic Glass rod. Nice soft tip and plenty of backbone wehen needed. They come in 3 power ratings and the lightweight model is perfect for the Sound, pulling plugs in the river, plunking and jetty fishing. All three models run around $100 each.

Thanks gman. I really enjoy using lamiglass rods and that ugly stix could become a backup or for a partner that forgot to bring a rod fitting for the sound. Would you happen to know if these models are available at outdoor emporium? The one in Seattle. If not that's ok I could stop by on my way home from work and check it out. Thanks for your input

Outdoor Emporium will normally have the Lamiglass Classic Glass rods and Sportsman's Warehouse typically has the Ugly Stiks in stock. Call before you go and give them model numbers to verify stock on hand. You may want to check out their websites and see if you can order the rods on-line and maybe pick up in store.

Not into ordering gear online especially rods. I like to hand pick my gear to make sure I like what I get. Thanks anyway
