Humminbird vs. Lowrance

Post by Ocktane » Wed Feb 02, 2011 3:57 pm

First off, I'll apologize if this has already been a discussion on here and I haven't caught it. I want to equip my Allison with a nice fish finder with side scan/imagining and the down scan/imaging. Been researching the two options and I figured I'd ask for anyone's opinion who may have used both and how they feel about each. I only have experience using the little humminbird I have on my boat now so I'm all ears!

Thanks!

Let the brand wars begin. Did you happen to view either product at the Sportsman's Show? They both looked pretty tight to me. I'm a Lowrance guy, but if you are looking for a quick and easy install of a high end side imaging sonar system, I'd look at the Humminbird system. I say this only because the Lowrance product is a two box, two transducer system where as the Humminbird is a one box, one transducer system. I have a feeling that the Lowrance solution may provide a bit more detail but it will cost you more up front for a comparable system and the install is going to be a bit more difficult. Also, being in the high reliability electronics field I'm always cautious when I see a ton of features in one small package, which is why I tend to look at Humminbird units with a bit of skepticism. A good analogy would be cell phones, my wife is on her third smartphone in less the 6 months while I'm still using my old flip phone that is now over 5 years old. My phone makes and holds onto calls better than any smartphone you can currently buy, but that is pretty much all it does.

Thankfully, I run my browser without Adobe Flash Player enabled or I would have been Rick rolled.

Go to Search
Topic: Boats and Boating
Search for: Need a new depth finder

Lots of good information. I went with the Humminbird 570DI (Down Image) after reading answers to my request for information from the fine folks on this forum and playing with display models. Not the cheapest and by far not the most expensive but it will do everything I need.
