Trying to catch my first steelhead
Well, I'm heading out with a fishing buddy to try and catch my first steely. He is a veteran steelheader so I should learn a thing or two. Hopefully I will have some pictures of my first steelhead to show everyone.

Patience young grasshooper. The steelhead does not jump into your net. With much patience you will be rewarded with the fight and catch of a lifetime. Lots of fishing time not many fish. As I have been counciled many times by my mentors. "Fish where the fish are, not where they're not.".
Build a man a fire and he's warm for the night. Light a man on fire and he's warm the rest of his life!

Well, an hour into fishing I caught a steelhead. 28 inches, and my crappy scale said 3 and a half pounds. The guy I was with estimated it between 6 and 7 pounds. I'll have pictures later.

Pre spawn or post spawn?

Drano lake, which is at the mouth of the Little White Salmon. The steelhead were pre spawn. My buddy caught three total, on of which was wild. I however caught the biggest fish. My lake report should pop up sometime soon.

Ah that's cheating! I though you were headed for the river. Good go anyway! That's a lot more than 3 pounds if it's 28". I'll bet it was a good fight! Way to go!

she did put up a good fight. She went under the anchor rope then jumped. I was really lucky she didn't snap me off on the rope. I figured out my scale. There are kg and lbs on the scale. I was reading the kg. doh. So it turns out the fish was about 7.5 lbs.

Nice catch if you want to get the full steelheading expeirience then you should try bank fishing.
The fish fights even harder with the current kicking in.

I've fished from the bank but have yet to make a catch. I don't really know washington waters for steelhead, plus I live in Kennewick. Most of my experience has been in Oregon and the Umatilla and Wallowa.
